  • Mapping evapotranspirative and radiative cooling services in an urban environment

Open Access•Alby Duarte Rocha, Stenka Vulova et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2022

As impervious surfaces have seized most areas in cities worldwide, urban heat island (UHI) has become a global concern. Urban green infrastructures (UGI) are crucial to providing microclimate regulation and thermal comfort through evapotranspiration (ET) and shading. High-spatiotemporal-resolution ET maps are required to plan and manage UGI to mitigate the UHI and droughts. We propose a method using open-access data, including hourly meteorologic…

Enfin,…

  • Carbon footprints of cities and other human settlements in the UK

Open Access•Jan C Minx, Jan Minx et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2013

A growing body of literature discusses the CO2 emissions of cities. Still, little is known about emission patterns across density gradients from remote rural places to highly urbanized areas, the drivers behind those emission patterns and the global emissions triggered by consumption in human settlements - referred to here as the carbon footprint. In this letter we use a hybrid method for estimating the carbon footprints of cities and other human…

  • It felt fluent, and I liked it: Subjective feeling of fluency rather than objective fluency determines liking

Michael Förster, Helmut Leder et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2012

According to the processing-fluency explanation of aesthetics, more fluently processed stimuli are preferred (R. Reber, N. Schwarz, & P. Winkielman, 2004, Processing fluency and aesthetic pleasure: Is beauty in the perceiver's processing experience? Personality and Social Psychology Review, Vol. 8, pp. 364-382.). In this view, the subjective feeling of ease of processing is considered important, but this has not been directly tested in perceptual…

  • The retention of public child welfare workers: The roles of professional organizational culture and coping strategies

Open Access•Joohee Lee, Michael Förster et al.•ARTICLE•Children and Youth Services Review•2011•Cited by: 12•References: 57

  • Employees' Intentions to Remain Employed in Child Welfare: Testing a Conceptual Model

Joohee Lee, Tim A Rehner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Child Welfare•2010•Cited by: 8•References: 16

The purpose of the current study was to extend prior research on retention of child welfare workers by constructing and testing a conceptual model for worker retention that combined individual and organizational factors. The sample used in this study (n = 244) was drawn from a Department of Human Services-Division of Family and Children Services (US DHS-DFCS) from a Southeastern state of the United States. Structural equation modeling was used to…

  • The European Social Space Revisited: Comparing Poverty in the Enlarged European Union

    Michael Förster, Michael F Förster•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Policy…•2005•Cited by: 8•References: 4

The article focuses on apprehending and comparing poverty in the context of the recent enlargement of the European Union. In particular, it discusses how alternative measures of poverty in an enlarged Europe could take into account both income and non-income aspects and the extent to which comparative measures of consistent poverty reflect country-specific versus European-wide thresholds. These measures are analysed and applied to survey data fro…

  • Longer-Term Trends in Income Poverty in the OECD Area

    Open Access•Michael Förster, Michael F Förster•ARTICLE•Czech Sociological Review•2004•Cited by: 2

This article reviews trends in income poverty in 26 OECD countries, including the most recent trends up to the early 2000s. Despite rather modest changes in overall poverty indicators over the long run, the structure of poverty has shifted over the years in all OECD countries, leading to higher poverty risks among younger age groups and consistently very high poverty levels among single parents -especially if they are without employment. Demograp…

  • International comparisons of income inequality and poverty: Findings from the Luxembourg Income Study

    Michael Förster, M F Forster•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2004•Cited by: 7

This paper reviews many of the unique contributions of LIS in the field of empirical comparative analysis of income inequality and poverty over the past two decades, as a complement to Atkinson's article in this issue. It presents an account of poverty and inequality research based on LIS as expressed in its numerous working papers. More substantively, this paper analyses the most recent basic indicators available through LIS to juxtapose interna…

  • Child Poverty and Family Transfers in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland

Open Access•Michael Förster, Michael F Förster et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of European Social Policy•2001•Cited by: 10•References: 1

Governments of the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland implemented reforms of family benefits in the mid-1990s. What were the common features of those reforms and what were the possible effects on child poverty? Based on household micro data, trends in poverty among children, large families and single parents are presented for two data points: one before and one after the restrictive reforms in family policies. The focus of the analysis is on chan…

  • The Cambridge Companion to Hegel

Open Access•H S Harris, Robert B Pippin et al.•BOOK•The Cambridge companion to Hegel•1993

Few thinkers are more controversial in the history of philosophy than Hegel. He has been dismissed as a charlatan and obscurantist, but also praised as one of the greatest thinkers in modern philosophy. No one interested in philosophy can afford to ignore him. This volume considers all the major aspects of Hegel's work: epistemology, logic, ethics, political philosophy, aesthetics, philosophy of history, philosophy of religion. Special attention …

  • Food Production and the Energy Crisis

    Open Access•David Pimentel, L E Hurd et al.•ARTICLE•Science•1973

The principal raw material of modern U.S. agriculture is fossil fuel, whereas the labor input is relatively small (about 9 hours per crop acre). As agriculture is dependent upon fossil energy, crop production costs will also soar when fuel costs increase two- to fivefold. A return of 2.8 kcal of corn per 1 kcal of fuel input may then be uneconomical. Green revolution agriculture also uses high energy crop production technology, especially with re…
