  • Pilypas Ruigys (1675–1749) ir kalbų lyginimas

    Daniel Petit•ARTICLE•Archivum Lithuanicum•2025

Philipp Ruhig (1675–1749) played a key role in the development of the Lithuanian language in 18th-century East Prussia, both through his work on Bible translation and as a lexicographer. No less important is his book Betrachtung der Littauischen Sprache (Königsberg, 1745), in which he attempted to define the origins of the Lithuanian language. This work was one of the first scholarly attempts to compare languages, and the first to include data on…

  • How to inflect uninflected words in Lithuanian

    Open Access•Daniel Petit•ARTICLE•Baltistica•2025

In Lithuanian, there are a number of quantificational adverbs that can perform the same functions as noun forms, even though they are invariable and are not marked by case endings, e.g. daũg ‘much’, mãža / mažaĩ ‘little, few’, ganà ‘enough’, kíek ‘how much’, tíek ‘so much’. The purpose of this article is to determine what strategies the Lithuanian language uses to compensate for the lack of case marking in these forms and to prevent this from lea…

  • Elative and excessive in Lithuanian

    Open Access•Daniel Petit•ARTICLE•Baltistica•2024

The Baltic quantifier *daugi is usually derived from a PIE root *dhegh- ‘to make, to produce’, although its formation, as a substantivized adjective or a noun, remains problematic. In this article, I attempt to determine the original function of the quantifier. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to compare the elative sense (‘very much’) and the excessive sense (‘too much’). The excessive is expressed in Lithuanian by the adverb per̃ (e.g. pe…

  • Existe-t-il un ergatif indo-européen

    Open Access•Daniel Petit•ARTICLE•Lalies•2024

L’idée que l’indo-européen présentait un alignement ergatif, et non un alignement nominatif-accusatif comme la plupart des langues qui en dérivent, a toujours été minoritaire, mais reste néanmoins présente chez certains auteurs jusqu’à aujourd’hui. L’objet de cet article est de montrer que cette hypothèse n’est fondée ni sur des arguments empiriques, ni sur des indices conduisant à la reconstruction d’un stade ergatif dans la préhistoire de l’ind…

  • The heterogeneous number in Baltic

    Open Access•Daniel Petit•ARTICLE•Baltistica•2023

The ‘heterogeneous number’ refers to dual or plural forms including two items one of which is not directly denoted by the sum. An example is Spanish padres ‘parents’ which includes [father] + [mother], but is expressed by the plural of padre ‘father’, leaving implicit the ‘mother’. The aim of this paper is to describe the extension of the heterogeneous number in the Indo-European languages and particularly in Lithuanian, where a distinction betwe…

  • On the etymology of Lithuanian dangus

    Open Access•Daniel Petit•ARTICLE•Baltistica•2021

Traditionally the Baltic name of the ‘sky’ (Lith. dangùs, Old Pr. dangus) is explained as derived from the verb deñgti ‘to cover’, based on the assumption that the sky was conceived of as a kind of curved surface covering the world. However, this traditional approach has left two questions open until now: (1) how to explain the formation of the word dangus, which is more akin to that of an adjective than to that of a noun; (2) how to reconstruct …

  • Les langues germaniques anciennes et leur philologie

    Daniel Petit•ARTICLE•Revue germanique internationale•2021

Cet article présente une introduction aux langues germaniques anciennes et à leur philologie. L’analyse des textes écrits dans les langues germaniques anciennes soulèvent des défis considérables, à la fois historiques, philologiques et linguistiques. L’objet de cette introduction est de fixer le cadre général dans lequel s’inscrit cette analyse et de présenter les différents articles du volume

  • Le vieux-saxon

    Daniel Petit•ARTICLE•Revue germanique internationale•2021

Cet article présente une introduction générale au vieux-saxon et à sa philologie. La documentation écrite en vieux-saxon est limitée à deux grands textes, Heliand et Genesis, dont les particularités philologiques doivent être analysées avec soin, si l’on se propose d’en comprendre les données linguistiques

  • New insights on Lithuanian accentuation from the unpublished manuscripts of Ferdinand de Saussure (1857–1913)

    Open Access•Daniel Petit•ARTICLE•Baltic Linguistics•2020

At his death, the great linguist Ferdinand de Saussure (1857–1913) left a considerable amount of papers, drafts and documents, some of them dealing with the Lithuanian language. Only in 1996 were they given to the public library of Geneva. The aim of this paper is to present some of the new insights offered by these unpublished documents in the field of Lithuanian accentuation. The majority of the documents pertaining to Lithuanian accentuation w…

  • Ablaut and neo-ablaut in Baltic and Indo-European

    Open Access•Daniel Petit•ARTICLE•Baltistica•2017

It is often assumed that PIE ablaut, used as a sub-morpheme accompanying other morphemes, tends to recede over time in the history of the individual Indo-European languages. On the other hand, it has been argued by some scholars that ablaut is often productive enough to expand over categories that did not have it originally. Both positions were advocated in the literature, the former by Mańczak (1958), the latter by Kuryłowicz (1947). In this pap…

  • Ablaut und Organismus in der Sprachwissenschaft des 19. Jahrhunderts

    Daniel Petit•ARTICLE•Historical Linguistics•2016

One of the major concerns of linguistics throughout the 19th century was to determine whether languages build their morphology by means of internal variations or by means of the addition of external elements to the root. This binary distinction between „organic“ and „mechanical“ languages was often connected with the problem of the PIE ablaut, since ablaut was regarded as an organic development, created by the root itself and manifesting its orga…

  • On distributive pronouns in the Baltic languages

    Open Access•Daniel Petit•ARTICLE•Baltic Linguistics•2015

This article deals with the origin of the three distributive pronouns of the Baltic languages: Old Prussian erains, Lithuanian kiekvíenas, Latvian ikviêns ‘everybody, everyone, each one’. They are all characterised by the numeral ‘one’ (OPr. ains, Lith. víenas, Latvian viêns), originally used as a pronominaliser, but they differ in their first element, which derives from a preposition ‘until’ in Old Prussian (er), from a conjunctive adverb ‘how m…

  • The rise of invariability in the Low Lithuanian reflexive participles and verbal nouns

    Open Access•Daniel Petit•ARTICLE•Baltistica•2014

In the Low Lithuanian dialects reflexive half-participles and verbal nouns are indeclinable and display a unique ending -damos, resp. -imos. The aim of this paper is to explain the invariability of these forms, which represents a striking feature of Low Lithuanian. It is proposed that invariability in the verbal nouns in -imos derives from their neuter origin, whereas in the half-participles in -damos it results from complex processes of phonolog…

    Open Access•Daniel Petit•ARTICLE•Baltic Linguistics•2012

The present paper deals with the origin of the Latvian indefinite pronoun kaût kas ‘something’. It is generally recognized that kaût kas is related to the conditional concessive conjunction kaût ‘even if, although’, but the semantic pathway that made such a derivation possible has not been reconstructed so far in a satisfactory way. In this paper, a detailed investigation of the etymology of kaût kas is conducted, with particular attention to the…

The aim of this book is to give a thorough survey of some of the major issues of Baltic linguistics. It consists of five chapters, devoted, respectively, to the problems of Baltic dialectology, to the development of the Baltic accentual system, to the fate …
