Who will work on Sunday? The winners and losers of Sunday laws relaxation
Rise in Home Working and Spousal Labor Supply
Sick of Working from Home
We explore the consequences of the development of home working for wages, hours worked and employee health in the post-COVID era. We base our research strategy on a French law passed in 2017 to encourage telework agreements between employers and employees. In the months following the law, many establishments signed telework agreements, and we show that this subsequently led to a much greater development of home working in these establishments aft…
Who Will Work on Sunday? The Winners and Losers of Sunday Laws Relaxation
The Value of Leisure Synchronization
This paper explores the extent to which workers are willing to trade hours worked for leisure time shared with their spouse. We use the fact that the number and timing of paid vacation days to which French employees are entitled vary in a quasi-random way from year to year along with the dates of public holidays. Self-employed workers do not benefit from public holidays, but we show that a large fraction of them substitute a day of unpaid leisure…
David Card, Nobel Prize 2021: The Design-Based Revolution

Following the Crowd: Leisure Complementarities beyond the Household
Leisure externalities across households have important implications for labor market regulations but have proven very difficult to identify. This paper exploits the unique features of school holidays and paid leave regulations in France to show that exogenous increases in the amount of leisure time enjoyed by workers living with children induce very significant increases in the demand for leisure of workers living in other households. We also pro…
Adjusting Your Dreams? High School Plans and Dropout Behaviour
At the end of middle school, many low‐achieving students realise that they do not have the ability to get into selective high school programmes, which may be a source of disengagement and eventually lead them to drop out of high school. Based on a randomised controlled trial, this article shows that a series of meetings facilitated by the school principals can help low‐achievers to formulate educational objectives better suited to their academic …

Adjusting Your Dreams? High School Plans and Dropout Behavior
Adjusting Your Dreams? The Effect of School and Peers on Dropout Behaviour 1At the end of middle school, many low achieving students have to abandon hope of getting into selective high-school programs, which may be a source of disappointment and eventually lead them to dropout from high-school.Based on a randomized controlled trial, this paper shows that low-achieving students' aspirations can be made more realistic through a series of meetings f…

Worktime Regulations and Spousal Labor Supply
We study interdependencies in spousal labor supply by exploiting the design of the French workweek reduction, which introduced exogenous variation in one's spouse's labor supply, at constant earnings. Treated employees work on average two hours less per week. Husbands of treated women respond by reducing their labor supply by about half an hour, consistent with substantial leisure complementarity, and specifically cut the nonusual component of th…

CHAPTER Nine France: Mass and Class-Persisting Inequalities in Postsecondary Education in France
Close Neighbours Matter: Neighbourhood Effects on Early Performance at School
Children's outcomes are strongly correlated with those of their neighbours. The extent to which this is causal is the subject of an extensive literature. There is an identification problem because people with similar characteristics are observed to live in close proximity. Another major difficulty is that neighbourhoods measured in available data are often considerably larger than those which matter for outcomes (i.e. close neighbours). Several i…

The effect of overcrowded housing on children's performance at school

We use data from the four latest surveys on Education and Qualifications (Enquetessur la Formation et la Qualification Professionnelle) for 1970,1977,1985, and 1993. Our main findingsare the following: The inequalities in social destinations among persons with identical educational attainments but of different social backgrounds are a…

The Decline in Demand for Unskilled Labor: An Empirical Analysis Method and its Application to France
The decline in the unskilled share of French employment is chiefly due to the slackness of domestic demand for those industries with the highest proportion of unskilled workers. The spread of computers has not been particularly conducive to substitution between skilled and unskilled labor. We test and accept the hypothesis of technical-progress neutrality within French industries. The mechanisms that generate inequality do not appear to be the sa…
