  • Rural depopulation and the decline of vernacular architecture

Open Access•Sandra Graus, Eva Tortajada Montalvá et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Housing and the Built…•2026

Depopulation in rural areas poses significant threats to the preservation of vernacular architecture, a key representation of a region's cultural and historical heritage. Across many rural regions of Southern Europe, depopulation has led to significant demographic and cultural shifts. In Portugal, this trend is evident in various interior regions, including the Bragança district where the population has decreased by approximately 47.4% between 19…

  • Political correctness and elite prestige

    Open Access•Esther Hauk, Javier Ortega•ARTICLE•Journal of Theoretical Politics•2025•References: 27

Consider a society where the prestige of orthodox views is linked to the prestige of the elite. Heterodox individuals are less likely to express their views if other peers refrain from doing so and if the elite is prestigious. In turn, corruption by the elite is less easily detected if orthodox views dominate. We characterize equilibrium self-denial and corruption and show that an exogenous increase in the range of orthodox views may result in a …

  • Who stays and who leaves? Immigration and the selection of natives across locations

    Open Access•Javier Ortega, Gregory Verdugo•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 7

We study the impact of local immigration inflows on natives’ wages using a large French administrative panel from 1976 to 2007. We show that local immigration inflows are followed by reallocations of blue-collar natives across commuting zones. Because these reallocations vary with the initial occupation, and blue-collar location movers have wages below the blue-collar average, controlling for changes in local composition is crucial to assess how …

  • Schooling, nation building and industrialization

    Open Access•Esther Hauk, Javier Ortega•ARTICLE•Journal of Theoretical Politics•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 20

We consider a Gellnerian model to study the transformation of a two-region state into a nation state. Industrialization requires the elites to finance schooling. The implementation of statewide education generates a common national identity, which enables cross-regional production, while regional education does not. We show that statewide education is chosen when cross-regional production opportunities and productivity are high, especially when t…
