Francesco Filannino. The Theological Programme of Mark
The opening verses of Mark’s gospel present a reader with a thicket of interrelated exegetical difficulties. These problems are both internal to the pericope (e.g., how does the composite quotation in 1:2–3 function within its context?) and external (how does Mark’s introductory section prepare the reader for what follows?). In this monograph, Filannino addresses both matters. He undertakes a close reading of Mark 1:1–15 as a basis for addressing…

Proclaiming the Judge of the Living and the Dead
This volume is a revised version of the author’s Ph.D. thesis accepted by the University of St. Andrews in 2017. The research was initially directed by Grant MacAskill, then completed under David M. Moffitt. Akagi claims that previous research on Luke–Acts and the speeches in Acts has missed the significance of Jesus’s role as eschatological judge of all humanity. He selects the speeches of Acts 10:34–43 and 17:22–31 as his focal texts since both…
Evan Hershman. Jesus as Teacher in the Gospel of Mark
Mark’s Gospel mentions Jesus as a teacher proportionally more often than either Matthew or Luke. But paradoxically, Mark includes less actual didactic content than either of its synoptic siblings. In this published version of the author’s PhD dissertation completed at Graduate Theological Union in 2018, Evan Hershman addresses this conundrum head on.The author develops his argument in three chapters prefaced by a twenty-two-page introduction and …

Hans Kvalbein enjoyed a lengthy career at the Norwegian School of Theology in Oslo, first as a student and then later as a member of the faculty, until his retirement in 2011; he passed away in 2013. Among his many interests was the mission of the church in the NT era and today. This collection of essays from 15 friends honors his work and memory by focusing on the theme announced in the book’s title. The authors hail primarily from Scandinavia a…

Blunted Nocturnal Salivary Melatonin Secretion Profiles in Military-Related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Background: Sleep disturbances are a hallmark of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet few studies have evaluated the role of dysregulated endogenous melatonin secretion in this condition. Methods: This study compared the sleep quality and nocturnal salivary melatonin profiles of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel diagnosed with PTSD, using the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS score ≥50), with two healthy CAF control groups; compris…

Multi-component Paleoindian surface sites in the Great Divide Basin of Wyoming
The Wyoming Basin contains several smaller depressions one of which is the Great Divide Basin formed by the Continental Divide that splits, resulting in internal drainage area of nearly 11,000 km2. The lowest elevation of the Great Divide Basin is at the Chain Lakes Flat and is the location of numerous playas. In this 140 km2 are four surface concentrations of Paleoindian materials beginning with Folsom and ending with Late Paleoindian. Based on …

Policy Watch
The evolving federal budget process has placed increasing demands on, and given unique powers to, the economic forecasters at OMB, Treasury, CBO, and the Joint Tax Committee of Congress. On the whole, the forecasters have been highly professional in their work, but differences in estimating techniques and, especially, constraints imposed on their analysis by elected officials have limited their credibility. Both the Administration and Congress “g…
Paleoindian bison procurement and paleoenvironments in Middle Park of Colorado
The Upper Twin Mountain Site, located within a geologic slump scar at 2548 m altitude, provides significant information on Paleoindian bison procurement. As the highest known Paleoindian bison bone bed, the site contained the partial skeletal remains of at least 15 adult Late Pleistocene bison (B. antiquus), Goshen projectile points, and debitage. Radiocarbon dates of 10,240±70 and 10,470±50 yr B.P. place Upper Twin Mountain midway between the no…

Some Implications of Nietzsche's Thought for Marxism
Max Weber once wrote that “one can measure the honesty of a contemporary scholar, and above all, of a contemporary philosopher, in his posture toward Nietzsche and Marx.” At the risk of belaboring the obvious, I would like to use Weber's comment as an excuse for reassessing Nietzsche's implications for Marxism—for, despite the difficulty of condensing his thought into debatable propositions, Nietzsche at least gestures toward a set of problems th…

Rationale, Research, and Role Relations in the Stirling Workshop
Criticisms of theory, design, and research connected with a workshop involving Catholics and Protestants from Belfast are assessed by the organizers and consultants responsible for the project. Differences in role and commitment are advanced as partial explanations for divergent assessments of the workshop

Legal Evolution and Societal Complexity
Comparative cross-cultural data suggest that legal characteristics occur in a standard sequential order. Mediation, police, and counsel are scaled in a sample of fifty-one societies; and their occurrence bears a systematic relationship to other attributes of the folk-urban continuum. Theoretical implications include possible relationships between damages and mediation, a partial disconfirmation of Durkheim's Division of Labor hypothesis, and a su…
