Environmental Justice in Social Work Education: A Call to Integrate Children’s Voices
Children are especially vulnerable to the health and developmental risks associated with environmental degradation, yet social work education rarely prepares students to engage children as stakeholders in environmental justice activism and decision-making. Using the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) as a guiding framework, this paper highlights the urgent need to integrate children’s voices into social work environmenta…
South via the North: The Dissemination of Chinese Science Fiction in the Global South and Its Embedding within the World Literary System
While Chinese science fiction (SF) has received wide attention in Western markets, its dissemination in the Global South remains underexplored. Drawing on digital humanities methods, including natural language processing, machine-learning-based text feature extraction and linear regression, this study quantitatively analyses the reception of Chinese SF in mainstream and social media in five Global South countries and shows that its spread is unev…
Understanding Regional Cultural-Psychological Variations and Their Sources in China: A Comprehensive Examination of Relevant Theories
This research comprehensively examined regional variations in individualism and collectivism within China and the explanatory power of 20 potential factors derived from the existing cultural psychological theories, including socioecological (e.g., climates, subsistence activities, and modernization) and population (e.g., ethnicity, genetic and linguistic features) ones. Three large-scale studies were conducted. In Study 1 ( N = 18,606), we assess…
Spatial Inequality and Shared Accessibility in the Fifteen-Minute Community Life Circle: A Multidimensional Framework for Resolving Supply–Demand Mismatch
The fifteen-minute community life circle (15-MCLC) paradigm has emerged as a pivotal policy instrument for sustainable urban development through optimized public facility allocation. Existing studies, however, focus mainly on community boundaries and accessibility, frequently neglecting the critical issue of cross-community facility sharing, which hinders effective resource integration. To address this gap, we propose a comprehensive 15-MCLC fram…
The Shadow Cost of State Violence: Evidence From Bureaucratic Purges in China
State violence inflicts obvious direct costs on its victims, but many of its significant consequences may be indirect. Building on the literature on principal-agent problems in authoritarian regimes, we argue that coercion against bureaucrats motivates them to pursue over-zealous goals at social costs. We test this argument by studying how bureaucratic purges in China under Mao impacted the behavior of local bureaucrats during the Great Leap Forw…
The Social Consequence of Bureaucratic Oversight: Evidence From the Great Chinese Famine
Existing literature shows that increasing political oversight of bureaucrats can improve the quality of government service delivery. Yet when the state is mainly concerned with maximizing revenue extraction from society, increasing bureaucratic oversight may result in social loss. I illustrate this argument with evidence from the Great Chinese Famine, drawing on panel data covering over 2000 counties. I show that weather shocks, which increased c…

Why Do Humble Individuals Act More Altruistically toward Foreigners: A Moderated Mediation Model
According to the humility-helping hypothesis, the question of whether humility affects altruistic behavior has received extensive attention. However, researchers have not established many links between humility and international altruism. The study explored humility as a stable personality trait and assessed whether it encouraged international altruism. It also examined the underlying mechanism between the foregoing relationship. We recruited 940…
Why Sitting by in Cyberbullying: The Measurement and Influencing Factors of Outsider Behavior
Bystanders play an important role in cyberbullying, yet the majority of bystanders remain silent as outsiders. To date, research on the measurement and influencing factors of outsider behavior in the context of cyberbullying is lacking. This research first adapted a valid and reliable instrument to measure this construct and then examined its influencing factors based on the arousal: cost‐reward model. In Study 1, a total of 901 participants (55%…
Examining the Association between Recent Maternal Incarceration and Adolescents’ Sleep Patterns, Dietary Behaviors, and Physical Activity Involvement
Maternal incarceration has become an increasingly common life event among adolescents in the U.S., especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Evidence suggests that maternal incarceration is a risk factor for adolescents’ internalizing and externalizing problems. However, its collateral consequences on adolescents’ sleep patterns, dietary behaviors and physical activity involvement remain unclear. This study uses the Fragile Family and Chil…

Rethinking the Causes of Corruption: Perceived Corruption, Measurement Bias, and Cultural Illusion
This paper extends the empirical research on determinants of corruption conducted during the last 20 years. It argues that the apparent correlations between cultural traditions and a country’s corruption level are not valid causal inferences. Instead, these correlations are primarily the artifacts of measurement bias on the dependent variable. Corruption measured by perception-based indicators can be conflated with the cultural bias conceived by …

The Bricolage of Words and Images
This essay discusses the role of photographs in Sebald’s Austerlitz. The author argues that photographs constitute a crucial paratext to the entire narrative, making possible the representation of traumatic memories through “the bricolage of words and images.” Engaging with Freudian psychoanalysis and Roland Barthes’s theory on photography, the author demonstrates how the process of retrieving memories and recovering from trauma can be achieved t…
