Brightness and temporal reallocation in wine label processing: An eye-tracking and pupillometry study
Purpose We examine whether wine label brightness modulates processing intensity and the temporal allocation of cognitive effort, drawing on principles from information richness theory and the adaptive strategy selection framework. Design/methodology/approach In a within-subjects task, 32 participants viewed 16 labels varying in brightness, hue and saturation. Eye-movements indexed orienting and sustained attention allocation; time-resolved pupill…
Space–society dynamics of residential differentiation: An integrated big data and interview study of migrants and locals in Hangzhou
Deciphering the nexus of trade frictions, pollution, and export quality
In this study, we explore the intricate relationship between domestic trade costs, pollution emissions, and the quality of exports. Utilizing a decade of provincial data from China, we employ spatial econometric models to dissect the nexus among these factors. Our analysis reveals a significant spatial dependency linking export quality with environmental pollution, indicating that increases in inter-regional trade costs not only degrade export qu…
Effects of global trade integration on skill polarization and wage disparity
This paper examines how the wage gap and skill distribution among workers with different skills respond to trade integration. Using Chinese city-level data for 2010–2020, we find that trade has a negative impact on the wage gap between middle and primary skilled workers based on their education, and a positive impact on the wage gap between high and middle skilled groups. The former has a negative effect on the mean value and distribution of labo…
Can international railway express improve green total factor productivity
The establishment of China-Europe Railway Express (CR Express) within the framework of the “One Belt and One Road” initiative has provided a new avenue for economic openness. However, this development has also led to industrial agglomeration along the railway, which may impose potential environmental pressures on the cities along its route. Utilizing a panel data covering prefecture-level cities from 2008 to 2019, this research employs the stagge…

Top Management Team Heterogeneity and the Performance of Cross-Border MA
In this paper, we aim to investigate the impact of the top management team (TMT) on the performance of cross-border M&A, using a sample of 270 cross-border M&A events of Chinese listed companies. We find that the heterogeneity of TMT characteristics could affect the performance of cross-border M&A in different ways. More specifically, a higher heterogeneity in gender can improve the M&A performance significantly, while more heterogeneities in ten…
Can Farmers Punch Their Tickets to Wealth? The Spillover Effect of High-Speed Railway on Agriculture Development
This paper studied the impact of high-speed railway linesonagricultural outputin the regions along their routes. It also investigated the heterogeneity of this impactbased on the terrain characteristics. The results of empirical testsusing county-level data show that ahigh-speed railway line can bring higher agricultural "dividends" to counties along the line. Notably, low altitude areas and regionswith gentle terrain exhibit a more pronounced pr…
Rural Development and Entrepreneurship: Exploration of Entrepreneurial Intention in Rural Area Among Chinese University Students
China's rapid economic growth and correlating growth of metropolitan areas has attracted young people leaving their hometowns from the rural areas. Revitalizing the rural areas has been a national development strategy in China. College students returning home to start businesses is one way to alleviate the current shortage of young talents in rural areas of China. Based on the model of goal-directed behavior (MGB), this paper takes behavioral att…
The Relationship between Duration of Smartphone Uses and Anxiety in University Students during the Covid-19 Outbreak
Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, China adopted a home isolation policy, which caused lifestyle changes for university students, including increased smartphone use. Several studies indicate that problematic smartphone use is associated with anxiety. However, this association has not been examined in the context of epidemics. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the duration of smartphone use was associated with anxiety in Chin…

Environmental Regulation and the Innovation Performance of Chinese Export Firms: A Quasi-Natural Experiment based on the Law of Promoting Cleaner Production
As China's export products have been pollution-intensive in recent decades, stringent environmental regulations have been applied to export products. Environmental regulation will squeeze out a firm's expense on innovation and impact its productivity through the cost effect and innovation offset effect. However, the overall impact on productivity change is uncertain because of the trade-off between the two effects. This study explores the relatio…
Effects and Environmental Features of Mountainous Urban Greenways (MUGs) on Physical Activity
The role played by urban greenways in supporting physical activity (PA) for public health benefits has been receiving increasing attention. Most studies on this topic have been conducted in plains, whereas studies in mountainous regions have been limited as a result of the complexity of these areas. To address this knowledge gap, this article aims to analyze the effects of the environmental features for a mountainous urban greenway (MUG) on PA, l…
Spatio-Temporal Patterns of Land Use and Cover Change from 1990 to 2010: A Case Study of Jiangsu Province, China
Land use and cover change (LUCC) is one of the most significant parts of global environmental changes, which reflects the interaction between human society and natural resources. In China, the urbanization process is experiencing a rapid sprawl since the reform and open program in 1978, and there has been a serious change in situation in the human−land relationship. In this paper, taking Jiangsu province located in the eastern coastal developed r…
Urban Road Network Expansion and Its Driving Variables: A Case Study of Nanjing City
Developing countries such as China are undergoing rapid urban expansion and land use change. Urban expansion regulation has been a significant research topic recently, especially in Eastern China, with a high urbanization level. Among others, roads are an important spatial determinant of urban expansion and have significant influences on human activities, the environment, and socioeconomic development. Understanding the urban road network expansi…
Mediating Role of Self-Concordance on the Relationship Between Internet Altruistic Behaviour and Subjective Wellbeing
The aim of the present study was to examine the mediating effect of self-concordance on the relationship between internet altruistic behaviour (IAB) and subjective wellbeing (SWB). A total of 356 Chinese university students (159 males and 197 females) participated, using the questionnaires in the Internet Altruistic Behavior Scale (IABS), the Self-Concordance Scale (SCS) and the General Well-Being Schedule (GWBS).
