Spatial justice in the Silver Economy: Determinants and spillover effects of elderly care resources in China
To address regional disparities in China’s emerging “Silver Economy,” this study investigates the spatial determinants of elderly care resources. Applying a Spatial Durbin Model (SDM) to 2022 cross-sectional data from 285 prefecture-level cities, we analyze the distribution of institutional care facilities and bed capacity. The analysis yields three key findings. First, an “Economic Capacity Paradox” exists: while local household disposable incom…
The Chinese Case: Challenging Established Foundational Consensus Regarding the Law of Social Security Development
This study challenges established consensus regarding social security development, specifically the dominant industrialization theory, by examining the Chinese case. Traditional theories emphasize socioeconomic factors, often undervaluing political forces. However, China’s authoritarian system offers a different perspective. Using quantitative analysis of national (1952–2013) and provincial (2002–2013) data, this paper assesses the impact of soci…

Multilevel effects of urban form and urban functional zones on housing prices: Evidence from open-source big data
While the relationship between local housing prices and the urban form and distribution of urban functional zones in a single city is well-discussed, the conclusion is usually sensitive to a particular city context, and cross-city comparative study is limited. This study attempts to examine the influences of urban form and urban functional zone distribution on housing prices within and between cities after controlling the city-wide socio-economic…

Political doctrine, economic growth, and the development of urban social security: Lessons from post-reform China
This study provides an empirical examination of the design and modification of China’s urban social security programme. In doing so, this study complements the popular assumption regarding the correlation between economic growth and social security development. Focusing on the economic and political motivations behind the ruling party’s decision to implement social security, this study first discusses the modification of urban social security and…
Effect of air pollution on adult chronic diseases: Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment in China
We utilize a quasi-experiment derived from China's Huai River policy to investigate the effect of air pollution on adult chronic diseases. The policy led to higher pollution exposure in cities north of the river boundary because they received centralized coal-based heating supply from the government during winter, whereas cities in the south did not. By applying a geographic regression discontinuity design based on distance from the Huai River, w…

How a non-democratic regime maintains its legitimacy over time: A study of changes in Chinese Communist Party legitimacy after 1949
By exploring the operation of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since its rise to power in 1949, this article demonstrates how a non-democratic regime maintains its legitimacy. While previous studies have shed light on the CCP’s sources of legitimacy, few abundantly and comparatively discuss the different forms of legitimacy and how legitimacy changes over time in a non-democratic state. This study addresses these gaps by analyzing how the CCP’s …

Comparison and Evaluation of China’s Urban Social Security Financing System Before and After the Reform
The sustainability of China’s urban social security financing system has recently been seriously questioned. This article divides the financing system’s development into two periods (before and after reform). It compares the capital collection and the distribution and circulation structures and reviews the financing system before and after reform. In this study, we also discuss and explain the ‘empty account’ phenomenon, which severely undermines…
Understanding Social Security Development: Lessons From the Chinese Case
Understanding the development of social security systems constitutes the ultimate goal of social security research. This review traces and compares two schools of thought regarding social security development: the convergence and divergence schools. Using a thematic approach, this article first categorizes extant studies into one of these two schools and then identifies the broadly accepted mechanism of social security development by comparing th…
Formation and dissipation dynamics of the Asian tropopause aerosol layer
The Asian tropopause aerosol layer (ATAL) is characterized by enhanced aerosol concentrations in the Asian summer monsoon anticyclone in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere at 13–18 km altitude. A growing body of evidence suggests that the aerosol enhancement is closely connected with deep convection during the monsoon. However, the origin of the aerosols is under debate, and the key factors that determine the ATAL variability remain poo…
Recent developments and future trends in China’s urban social security
China's urban social security system has recently undergone extensive modification, though the future of this system's structure and benefit level are still in question. This study aims to explore whether the development of China's urban social security system is converging with or diverging from the western model by comparing its structure, both in principle and reality, and the modification mechanism of this system with the arguments presented …
