Using Partner Interviews to Support Language and Mathematics Development for Elementary Multilingual Learners
While peer-to-peer conversations can be beneficial for children’s linguistic and mathematical development, the specific conditions needed to support optimal conversations remain elusive. As part of a larger project to infuse peer-to-peer interactions into mathematics instruction for multilingual students, 8- to 11-year-old children in the U.S. were videotaped by their teachers interviewing one another about their solution strategies to equal shar…
Face matters
Promoting high-effort pro-environmental behaviors (PEBs) among travelers remains a significant challenge in advancing sustainable tourism. While existing research has emphasized the influence of social norms in shaping such behaviors, the potential of intelligent technologies in this area has been largely overlooked. Service robots, in particular, represent a promising yet underexplored frontier for environmental persuasion, possessing psychologi…
Why Has in‐Work Poverty Risen in Britain
Is work a reliable route out of poverty, and what does that depend upon? In Britain, the headline relative poverty rate for those in working households steadily rose from 13.4% in 1994–95 to 18.4% in 2019–20. We study the drivers of this increase. Significant rises in earnings inequality observed over the period were a modest contributor, accounting for 1.3 percentage points (pp). Higher earnings growth for poorer families did not reduce working …

CSR and Founder Legacy Dynamics Around Succession
There is much debate as to whether family firms are socially responsible. Leveraging behavioral theories of intertemporal choice, we argue that CSR practices evolve across different stages of succession. As founders approach the later stages of their careers and identify successors, their desire to enhance their legacy becomes more pronounced, leading to an increase in CSR. Founders during this stage benefit from the socioemotional satisfaction t…
Single and joint associations of physical activity and depression with risk of all-cause mortality
Our study found that depression was positively associated with increased mortality risk, while PA was negatively associated with it; moreover, the mortality risk associated with depression worsened with low levels of physical activity. These findings underscore the critical importance of promoting physical activity, especially among individuals with depression, as a potential strategy to mitigate mortality risk. This highlights the need for integ…
Impact of Family Interaction on Future Adult Child-Parent Travel Intention
Adult child-parent travel is a prevalent, but understudied, phenomenon in Confucian Asian countries. To better understand how adult children evaluate such tourism experiences, this research re-conceptualizes dimensions of family interaction and examines their impacts on future adult child-parent travel intention within the mainland China context using a mixed-method approach. Guided by the McMaster model of Family Functioning, qualitative finding…
The Employment and Distributional Impacts of Nationwide Minimum Wage Changes
We assess the impact of nationwide minimum wages on employment throughout the whole wage distribution by exploiting geographical variation in the level of wages. We find a substantial increase in wages at the bottom of the wage distribution, while we detect a small, statistically insignificant negative effect on employment. Combining the estimated change in the wage distribution with a tax and benefit microsimulation model, we show that the minim…
CEO Religion and Corporate Social Responsibility
Studies linking religion to CSR have produced conflicting findings due to a failure to draw distinctions among religious influences and different CSR practices, and to theorize their connection. Drawing on social identity theory and the theory of planned behavior, we first argue that religion will influence CSR when ethical values from a CEO’s religious social identification resonate with an aspect of CSR. Second, CEO attitudes congruent with tho…
Investigating the Transition Upgrading Paths of Manufacturing Enterprises From an Energy Source Perspective
As the manufacturing industry is the foundation of the national economy, many countries have made concerted efforts to promote the transition upgrading of manufacturing enterprises from political, industrial, and academic circles. This study employed content analysis to explore the transition upgrading factors for manufacturing enterprises from an energy source perspective. With the help of FsQCA (Fuzzy-sets qualitative comparative analysis), whi…

Environmental Risk Assessment of Recycled Products of Spent Coppery Etchant in Jiangsu Province, China
With the vigorous development of the 5G industry, the characteristic hazardous waste, spent coppery etchant, was also produced in large quantities. In recent years, there are many companies that have begun to collect spent coppery etchant for the purpose of producing recycled products, such as copper sulfate, copper oxide, basic copper chloride, and copper powder, which often contain large amounts of heavy metals. However, due to the lack of rele…
Covid‐19 and Inequalities
This paper brings together evidence from various data sources and the most recent studies to describe what we know so far about the impacts of the COVID‐19 crisis on inequalities across several key domains of life, including employment and ability to earn, family life and health. We show how these new fissures interact with existing inequalities along various key dimensions, including socio‐economic status, education, age, gender, ethnicity and g…
The Mental Health Effects of the First Two Months of Lockdown during the Covid‐19 Pandemic in the UK
In this paper, we estimate the effects of the COVID‐19 pandemic on mental health in the UK. We use longitudinal micro data for the UK over the period 2009–20 to control for pre‐existing trends in mental health and construct individual‐specific counterfactual predictions for April 2020, against which the COVID‐19 mental health outcomes can be assessed. Our analysis reveals substantial effects at the population level, approximately equal in magnitu…
Understanding the emergence and development of online travel agencies
Purpose With the explosive growth of the Internet, online travel agents (OTAs) have gained an increasing market share in the online booking market. However, OTAs are facing fierce competition from hotels' direct booking channels, as well as competition among themselves. Therefore, there is a need for an understanding of the evolution of the OTA market from a dynamic perspective. The purpose of this study is to investigate the long-term effect of …

The Impacts of Different Air Pollutants on Domestic and Inbound Tourism in China
Previous studies have reported that air pollution negatively affects the tourism industry. This paper attempted to answer the following question: among different air pollutants, which one acts as the most adverse factor? The study was based on a sample of panel data covering 337 Chinese cities for the period between 2007 and 2016. Four pollutant indicators were inspected: PM 2 . 5 (particulate matter 2.5 micrometers or less in size), PM 10 (parti…
The Relationship Between the Actual Level of Air Pollution and Residents’ Concern about Air Pollution
This study explored the relationship between the actual level of air pollution and residents' concern about air pollution. The actual air pollution level was measured by the air quality index (AQI) reported by environmental monitoring stations, while residents' concern about air pollution was reflected by the Baidu index using the Internet search engine keywords "Shanghai air quality". On the basis of the daily data of 2068 days for the city of S…
DBSCAN Revisited, Revisited
At SIGMOD 2015, an article was presented with the title “DBSCAN Revisited: Mis-Claim, Un-Fixability, and Approximation” that won the conference’s best paper award. In this technical correspondence, we want to point out some inaccuracies in the way DBSCAN was represented, and why the criticism should have been directed at the assumption about the performance of spatial index structures such as R-trees and not at an algorithm that can use such inde…
