Measurement Equivalence Test on Family Cohesion Scale
Cohesion measure launched from the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES) is a well-known instrument to assess family functioning. It is essential to perform a measurement equivalence test of cohesion targeting racially diverse families. The web-based self-administered survey was performed and 291 college/university students’ responses in Ohio were collected (Whites = 37.5%, Hispanics = 23%, Asians = 23%, and Blacks = 16.5%). T…

The association between social isolation and musculoskeletal health in older community-dwelling adults
Social isolation was associated with higher odds of having depressive symptoms and predicted the development of poor physical capability 6 years later. Further longitudinal studies that include loneliness as a covariate are warranted

Temporal Relation Between Youths’ Perceived Spirituality and Indicators of Positive Development
Using data from the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development (PYD), we employed a cross-lagged model to examine the temporal order of the relationship between PYD and youths' spirituality. Our sample consisted of 1,842 youth from 32 states in the continental United States. Mean age across the two waves of data used in this study was 15.5 and 16.6, respectively. The cross-lagged model allowed us to test the model suggesting that youth must develop …

The Central Roles of Race and Racism in Reframing Family Systems Theory
This article explores the central roles in family research and practice of race and racism in the reframing of family systems theory (FST) when applied to Black and/or African American families. Specifically, we discuss how current concepts of FST allow for an understanding of racial and ethnic socialization in the parent–child familial subsystem. We then theorize the potential reframing of FST to better accommodate race, ethnicity, and racism, a…

Revisiting Mahoney’s ‘My body is a temple…’ study
This study proposes and tests a new model that seeks to explain associations between religion, spirituality and health outcomes among adolescents. Specifically, we test for mediating effects of perceived spirituality on religion–health relations. Using data from the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development, we find that perceived spirituality mediates religion–health relations, but that varies based on youths’ conceptualisation of spirituality. Wi…

A re-investigating of the religious orientation-moral reasoning relationship
This study re-investigates the relationship between religious orientation and Kohlberg’s moral reasoning among students at a midwestern (USA) university. Multiple regression analyses revealed that quest-oriented religiosity was significantly positively related to principled moral reasoning, as consistently found in previous studies, while intrinsic religious orientation showed no relation to principled moral reasoning. We discuss our findings thr…

The Effects of Denomination on Religious Socialization for Jewish Youth
The transmission model of religious socialization was tested using a sample of American Jewish parents and adolescents. The authors expected that measures of religiousness among parents would be associated with those among their children. Interaction effects of denominational membership were also tested. Data were collected from a sample of 233 parent-child pairs in 9 Jewish schools in the Midwestern United States. Findings revealed modest suppor…
PP68 Prevalence and Risk Factors of Poor Sleep in a Community-Dwelling Older Population
Background Poor sleep is associated with morbidity and mortality, and research indicates that poor sleep quality is common in older people. The aim of this investigation was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of poor sleep in a community-dwelling older population. Methods The target population was 591 men and women aged 71-80 years from the Hertfordshire Cohort Study. 443 (75.0%) agreed to participate. Sleep was assessed using the valid…
An Empirical Examination of Youths' Perceptions of Spirituality as an Internal Developmental Asset During Adolescence
This mixed method study explores youths' perceived conceptions of spirituality and tests whether spirituality is an additional internal developmental asset (IDA). Spirituality was assessed using an open-ended question asking youth to define spirituality followed by a closed-ended item gauging the extent to which their definition reflected their own spirituality. Using grounded theory to assess youths' qualitative responses resulted in the creatio…

P28 Patterns of dietary supplement use among older men and women
Setting Use of dietary supplements has increased over recent decades in the UK. Although dietary supplement use has been described in a number of populations we know little about patterns of supplement use in older people. Objective The objectives of this study were to describe dietary supplement use in the Hertfordshire Cohort Study (HCS), to determine patterns of supplement use, and to investigate the extent to which supplement user groups diff…

Decline in lung function and mortality
BACKGROUND: There is a direct association between level of lung function, measured by forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and mortality rates. A low FEV may result from an increased decline in FEV1 with age, which may be an independent predictor of mortality. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between decline in FEV1 and mortality in a cohort from a community health study. SETTING AND METHODS: From five cross sectional studies in Busse…

Prevalence of psychiatric disorders in young people in the care system
Recently, professional and political concern has grown about the severity and types of problems experienced by young people in the care system, this group being one of the most vulnerable in terms of psychological disturbance. Their risk of psychiatric ill health is higher than that of any other easily identified group in our society,1 and studies have consistently identified a high incidence of behavioural problems.2 No study has systematically …
Diplomacy
Chiefly for the wrong reasons, diplomacy has recently made some notable incursions into international relations programmes at British universities. For, in the field of money-spinning taught Master's degrees, this subject has been perceived as a crowd puller. Out there, beyond the European Community with its aggravatingly-low fee levels, are, it is calculated, many who will be attracted by an MA with 'diplomatic' in its title. With some ground, i…
