Uncovering nonlinear urban factors of homelessness
Urban homelessness is a complex issue rooted in structural inequalities and spatial disparities, significantly affecting urban life and well-being. Existing research often relies on survey-based or linear regression methods, which are limited in scope, coverage, and their ability to capture nonlinear associations. This study addresses these gaps by combining homeless incident reports from New York City’s 311 service with multi-source urban big da…

Assessing nighttime homeless shelter accessibility and its socioeconomic associations in Los Angeles
Spatiotemporal Analysis of Urban Vitality and Its Drivers from a Human Mobility Perspective
Urban vitality is a critical metric for assessing the development and appeal of urban areas, playing a pivotal role in urban planning and management. Traditionally, surveys and census data have been used to measure urban vitality; however, these methods are often time-consuming, resource-intensive, and limited in coverage. This study addresses these limitations by employing mobile phone signaling data to develop a model for quantifying urban vita…
The Impact of Digitalization via Broadband Expansion on Bank Transparency
This paper studies the effects of bank digitalization on bank transparency. We propose a novel, time-varying measure of bank digitalization based on variations in broadband access across bank depositors. Our baseline digital measure captures how digital a bank’s customers are using a deposit-weighted access to broadband metric. Analyzing a sample of over 5,800 banks, this paper finds that more digital banks are more transparent. This finding high…
Quantifying seasonal bias in street view imagery for urban form assessment
Street view imagery (SVI), with its rich visual information, is increasingly recognized as a valuable data source for urban research. Particularly, by leveraging computer vision techniques, SVI can be used to calculate various urban form indices (e.g., Green View Index, GVI), providing a new approach for large-scale quantitative assessments of urban environments. However, SVI data collected at the same location in different seasons can yield vary…

Semantic Riverscapes
Characteristics and trends of hillside urbanization in China from 2007 to 2017
Understanding Ridesourcing Mobility and the Future of Electrification
The development of mobile Internet, smartphones, and location-based services has enabled ridesourcing, which pools vehicles and drivers to provide on-demand travel services. As an alternative transportation option, ridesourcing has significant impacts on urban travel. However, the unique mobility pattern of ridesourcing and its impact on vehicle electrification have not been well studied. To address this gap, this paper presents a comparative, bi…
