Managing War-to-Peace Transitions after Intra-State Conflicts
Examining 50 intra-state peace processes (1989–2006) through fsQCA, we identify three clusters of peace agreements being consistently associated with successful war-to peace transitions: ‘an international approach’, ‘a transitional justice approach’, and ‘a domestic approach’. Probing these configurations at the case level shows that successful peace processes typically include packages of provisions which trigger both cost-increasing and fear-re…
The dataset of Political Agreements in Internal Conflicts (Paic)
This paper introduces the new dataset of Political Agreements in Internal Conflicts (PAIC) and presents its first application. PAIC captures the institutional provisions in political agreements concluded between 1989 and 2016. It provides information on 91 variables, along five dimensions: power sharing, transitional justice, cultural institutions, territorial self-governance and international assistance. First, the paper presents the data collec…
Cultivated Collaboration in Transitional Justice Practice and Research
∞ The Voices of Memory project started with a fairly simple premise: to highlight women's life experiences under dictatorship. What started as a one-week workshop in 2017 evolved into a collaborative process of co-creation - the Voices of Memory project - using creative means of expression to help raise awareness of the impact of repression on Tunisian women. A formative principle, and primary contribution of this project, was a fully collaborati…
Transforming Tunisia
In this article we argue that examining efforts at Internet reform in Tunisia holds important lessons for transitional justice theory and practice, as well as for the way the field defines itself in a space where technology plays an important role facilitating both repression and transitions. Given the impact of the Tunisian revolution in inspiring the Arab uprisings, as well as those elsewhere, a close examination of the Tunisian revolution offe…
Yes Chef
This article foregrounds the experiences of a young chef ('John') during the early years of his career in the fine dining industry. His descriptions paint a vivid picture of life as an elite chef, which is thrilling, exciting and rewarding, but also mundane, degrading and dehumanizing. The environment John describes is characterized by strong ideologies and him working hard to align himself with a highly gendered (often fantastical) image of what…
Conflict Management in Divided Societies
Centripetalists believe that the best way to manage democracy in divided societies is not to replicate existing ethnic divisions in the legislature and other representative organs, but rather to put in place institutional incentives for cross-ethnic behaviour in order to encourage accommodation between rival groups. As such, they typically reject elitedriven approaches such as consociationalism, and the reification of ethnicity that goes with it,…
Political Settlements in Divided Societies
Yakinthou throws light on the challenges of adopting political settlements in frozen conflicts and divided societies by focusing on the conflict in Cyprus, the resolution of which has for years been h
The EU's Role in the Cyprus Conflict
This article explains how the EU became a key player in the Cyprus conflict and examines how local perceptions of the Union and its usefulness have affected its ability to manage the conflict. It argues that the EU undermined its own membership conditionality as a lever for the country's reunification through uncoordinated and mismanaged engagement in the pre-accession period. While the post-accession power balance shifted in favour of the Greek …
