An Evaluation of the Healthy Relationships Program for Male Adolescents in Juvenile Detention: A Mixed Method Approach
Currently, there is limited empirically published Australian studies on effective rehabilitative programs in youth justice. This study used a mixed-methods approach to evaluate the Healthy Relationships program which was designed to challenge attitudes relating to intimate partner violence for male adolescents in detention in Western Australia. Paired group analyses compared pre and post measures of attitudes towards intimate partner violence and…
Validation of the YLS/CMI on an Australian Juvenile Offending Population
There is a wealth of research that shows juvenile justice systems that utilize structured and validated assessment tools, such as the YLS/CMI, are far more effective at reducing rates of recidivism than those who do not. In line with this research, the Department of Justice (DoJ) in Western Australia adopted the YLS/CMI as the standard risk assessment tool for evaluating the criminogenic risk and needs of youth entering the justice system. While …

Optimising mothers’ health behaviour after hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: A qualitative study of a postnatal intervention
The Blood Pressure Postpartum study was prospectively registered as a clinical trial with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (anzctr.org.au) on 13 December 2018 (registration number: ACTRN12618002004246)
Transformative Learning: A Precursor to Preparing Health Science Students to Work in Indigenous Health Settings
Australian undergraduate programmes are implementing curriculum aimed at better preparing graduates to work in Indigenous health settings, but the efficacy of these programmes is largely unknown. To begin to address this, we obtained baseline data upon entry to tertiary education (Time 1) and follow-up data upon completion of an Indigenous studies health unit (Time 2) on student attitudes, preparedness to work in Indigenous health contexts and tr…
Driving Transformative Learning within Australian Indigenous Studies
Australian undergraduate programmes implementing Indigenous studies courses suggest transformative educational outcomes for students; however, the mechanism behind this is largely unknown. To begin to address this, we obtained baseline data upon entry to tertiary education (Time 1) and follow-up data upon completion of an Indigenous studies health unit (Time 2) on student learning approaches, student-teacher rapport, classroom community, critical…

The Arithmetic of Social Movements: Theoretical Implications
This paper tries to explain many well-known patterns in the careers of cult movements by close examination of the arithmetic of plausible rates of recruitment and growth. Why do cults so often grow rapidly at the start, only to stall after a few years? Why do cult movements so often retreat from their initial aim to convert the world and turn inward? Are cult founders charismatic in any useful sense of that term? Why do religious movements mainta…

Accepting 'Significant Others: Six Models
Six alternative models of the ways in which individuals accept and organize information from potential sources are proposed. Parameter estimates are obtained from a set of experiments (N=110), and the models are tested against data from an independent set of experiments (N=114). Result of the test favor a simple additive model. Two of the models proposed are elaborations of ideas recently proposed by Berger and Fisek (1970), and results of our te…
