Health dimensions
This article outlines an interdisciplinary research agenda in the nexus of climate change, extreme weather, human im/mobility and public health. We identify four research themes. First, climate im/mobility and health narratives, where research is needed on how competing narratives are adopted by citizens and how these influence their attitudes towards climate im/mobile groups, while also giving a stronger voice for these groups to tell their own …
School gardens as socio-ecological learning systems
Adolescents face rising food insecurity driven by climate disruption, socio‐economic inequality, and instability across local food systems. School garden programmes are increasingly promoted as experiential interventions that can strengthen food‐related capabilities and their resilience, yet their contribution in secondary school settings remains underexamined. This review synthesises 22, peer‐reviewed studies published between 2001 and 2024 acro…
Crisis and connection among university students during the Covid-19 pandemic
The global health emergency caused by COVID-19 affected student’s socioeconomic conditions and health worldwide. Public health restrictions changed students’ lifestyles, family and community relationships, and reliance on support systems. The COVID-19 pandemic mandated a shift to virtual learning. Students found themselves unprepared, anxious, and ambivalent. This study delved into the challenges students face and the coping strategies adopted by…
Nigerian adolescents’ exposure to fast food marketing via Instagram
Fast food companies heavily target lower income adolescents through the use of Instagram. This raises health concerns related to the consumption of unhealthy food that arises from regular advertising in that demographic. Further, this exposure increases ad interactions that could cause adolescents to view fast foods more positively. Overall, findings indicate the need for actions aiming to limit and reduce the effect of adolescents' exposure to f…
Nutritional status of a young adult population in saline-prone coastal Bangladesh
Introduction Like many low- and middle-income countries, understanding the nutritional status of the young population in Bangladesh has had less attention. With projected climate change and associated sea level rise, the existing problem of salinity in coastal Bangladesh will significantly increase and further worsen agrobiodiversity. This research aimed to examine the nutritional status of a young population in climate-vulnerable coastal Banglad…
Exploring mental health challenges and coping strategies in university students during the Covid-19 pandemic
Background: Mental health challenges have emerged worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic. University students experienced changes in their lifestyles, academic life, family relationships, earning capacity, and support systems. This study explores the common mental health challenges in university students and their coping strategies using social support in the first wave of lockdowns in Dhaka city in 2020. By learning from young people's impacts a…

Sewing shirts with injured fingers and tears
BACKGROUND: The ready-made garment industry in Bangladesh not only contributes to the nation's economic development, but has created income opportunities for women, benefiting their whole family. However, these benefits come at considerable cost to the women. This research examines how the work environment and gendered family role in this conservative society affect the health of the female industrial workers. METHODS: A qualitative study employe…
Understanding the Operational Concept of a Flood-Resilient Urban Community in Jakarta, Indonesia, from the Perspectives of Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change Adaptation and Development Agencies
Climate change-related extreme events such as floods have and will continue to present a great challenge to disaster risk management. There is a pressing need to develop a robust management strategy via enhancing the resiliency of the community, particularly in the context of complex urban environments, like Jakarta. Resilience is conceptualized within specific contexts and uniquely tailored to the targeted setting, yet research regarding the ope…
Modification Effects of Population Expansion, Ageing, and Adaptation on Heat-Related Mortality Risks Under Different Climate Change Scenarios in Guangzhou, China
(1) Background: Although the health effects of future climate change have been examined in previous studies, few have considered additive impacts of population expansion, ageing, and adaptation. We aimed to quantify the future heat-related years of life lost ( YLLs ) under different Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) scenarios and global-scale General Circulation Models (GCMs), and further to examine relative contributions of population …
Progress in the early warning system in Aceh province, Indonesia since the 2004 earthquake-tsunami
Aceh province is vulnerable to multiple hazards. Despite improvements in disaster preparedness efforts including the early warning system (EWS) following the catastrophic 2004 earthquake-tsunami, ineffective disaster responses still occur here. An EWS is essential to provide early disaster information to people in order to respond appropriately. An integrated EWS consists of risk knowledge; monitoring; dissemination and communication; and respons…
Commonalities between Disaster and Climate Change Risks for Health
Disasters and climate change have significant implications for human health worldwide. Both climate change and the climate-sensitive hazards that result in disasters, are discussed in terms of direct and indirect impacts on health. A growing body of literature has argued for the need to link disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. However, there is limited articulation of the commonalities between these health impacts. Understandin…
The Influence of Gender Relations on Women's Involvement and Experience in Climate Change Adaptation Programs in Bangladesh
The nexus between poverty and climate change is a major concern, especially in a country like Bangladesh where lack of resources is a significant problem in both rural and urban areas. Climate change affects a wide demographic of the population in Bangladesh, and among those affected, women are more vulnerable to climate change impacts, as is evident from the history of climate-induced disasters in the country. Climate change increases women's so…
The Pandemic and its Impacts

The impact of prevention and control of infectious disease law on diarrhoea control
To address to burden of infectious diseases such as diarrhoea, the Vietnamese government has enacted the Law on Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (LPCIDs) since July 2008. However, no evaluation of the impact of the LPCID has been conducted. This study aims to evaluate the impact of the LPCID on diarrhoeal control for the 5 years following the implementation of LPCID in Vietnam. We used an interrupted time series design using a segmen…
Tempo-Spatial Variations of Ambient Ozone-Mortality Associations in the USA
Although the health effects of ambient ozone have been widely assessed, their tempo-spatial variations remain unclear. We selected 20 communities (ten each from southern and northern USA) based on the US National Morbidity, Mortality, and Air Pollution Study (NMMAPS) dataset. A generalized linear model (GLM) was used to estimate the season-specific association between each 10 ppb (lag0-2 day average) increment in daily 8 h maximum ozone concentra…
Associations between risk perception, spontaneous adaptation behavior to heat waves and heatstroke in Guangdong province, China
There is a large room for improving health risk perception and adaptation capacity to heat waves among the public of Guangdong province. People with higher risk perception and fewer adaptation behaviors during heat waves may be more vulnerable to heat waves
An epidemiological survey of children's iodine nutrition and goitre status in regions with mildly excessive iodine in drinking water in Hebei Province, China
Objective To identify children's iodine nutrition and goitre status in areas with mildly excessive iodine in drinking water. Design A cross-sectional survey. Probability proportional to size sampling was employed to randomly select children from thirty townships where the median iodine content in drinking water ranged from 150 to 300 μg/l; their urinary iodine concentrations were determined and their thyroid volumes were measured by ultrasound. D…
