  • World Markets and Political Instability within Less Developed Countries

    Open Access•David P Rapkin, William P Avery•ARTICLE•Cooperation and Conflict•1986•Cited by: 4

It is often asserted that instabilities in world markets are transmitted into and exert destabilizing effects upon the national economies and domestic socio-political systems of LDCs. Yet our knowledge of these linkages is scant, owing partly to the unintegrated state of prior theory and empirical research. This paper draws together the disparate literature on international economic and domestic political instabilities, specifies types of linkage…

  • The Commonwealth Caribbean: The Integration Experience

    William P Avery, Sidney E Chernick•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•1980

The Commonwealth Caribbean comprises twelve small, developing territories that are in the process of forging an integrated community. Bound by a common language and similar customs and colonial heritage, the community still faces many problems that derive partly from its small size, partly from economic fragmentation, and partly from the absence of a coordinated strategy for economic development. This book concentrates on the broad issues of regi…

  • Human Rights, National Security, and the U.S. Senate: Who Votes for What, and Why

    William P Avery, David P Forsythe•ARTICLE•International Studies Quarterly•1979

The chief concern of this study is to determine how members of the U.S. Senate perceive the linkage between human rights and national security, and to explain what domestic factors affect this perception. Regression analysis of eight human rights votes during the Ninety-Third and Ninety-Fourth Congresses shows that strongly prodefense perspectives on national security have a heavy and significant negative effect on human rights voting in the Sena…

  • Oil, politics, and economic policy making: Venezuela and the Andean Common Market

    Open Access•William P Avery•ARTICLE•International Organization•1976•Cited by: 4•References: 4

Venezuela's entry into the Andean Common Market (ACM) represents a case of systems transformation. Venezuelan membership has led both to major changes in economic provisions of the Common Market, and to significant alterations in political relations among members. Analysis of these changes depends on an understanding of the political debate in Venezuela, which was prolonged, and which led to membership under favorable terms earned through hard ne…

  • Innovation in Latin American Regionalism: The Andean Common Market

    Open Access•William P Avery, James D Cochrane•ARTICLE•International Organization•1973•Cited by: 8•References: 12

The Andean Common Market, the most recent attempt at regional integration in Latin America, differs from the other Latin American efforts both in the factors that prompted its formation and in the support it had when it was established. More importantly, it differs in its terms and provisions, providing for a higher level of integration than any other Latin American effort. Several of its features—a common policy on foreign investment, regional p…

  • Sex Differences in Black Political Beliefs and Behavior

John C Pierce, William P Avery et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Political…•1973•Cited by: 4

Whether through choice, systematic exclusion, or norms of role allocation, women generally exhibit lower rates of political participation than men.' Yet, the unanimity with which this conclusion has been reached is weakened by the scant attention directed to subcultural variations, particularly in those subcultures thought to have unique patterns of expected behavior for men and women. In the United States, many scholars consider the black subcul…
