  • Sedimentary Proxy Evidence of a Mid-Holocene Hypsithermal Event in the Location of a Current Warming Hole, North Carolina, USA

    Open Access•Benjamin R Tanner, Chad S Lane et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

A wetland deposit from the southern Appalachian mountains of North Carolina, USA, has been radiocarbon dated and shows continuous deposition from the early Holocene to the present. Non-coastal records of Holocene paleoenvironments are rare from the southeastern USA. Increased stable carbon isotope ratios (? 13 C) of sedimentary organic matter and pollen percentages indicate warm, dry early- to mid-Holocene conditions. This interpretation is also …

  • Self-Sufficiency, Personal Empowerment, and Community Revitalization

    Open Access•Jeanette Hassin, Robert S Young•ARTICLE•American Indian Culture and…•1999

INTRODUCTION\nNative Americans have been subjected to colonial domination by European nations for five centuries, resulting in a radical destabilization of their sociocultural and economic systems, a general deterioration of health, and rapid depopulation. The resulting effects of cultural differences and conflicts, learned dependency, poverty, and feelings of powerlessness and low self-regard have impacted dramatically the health and quality of …

  • Diabetes as a Disease of Civilization

    Alan H Goodman, Jennie R Joe et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•1996

  • Geoarchaeology of Johns Bay, Maine

    Open Access•Robert S Young, Daniel F Belknap et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1992•Cited by: 3•References: 1

This study examines the Holocene history of a glacially‐sculpted Maine embayment using both geological and archaeological data bases. High‐resolution seismic profiling, in combination with vibracores and Holocene sea‐level curves, were used to develop the Holocene stratigraphy and paleogeographic evolution of Johns Bay and Pemaquid Beach, Maine. These geological databases were, whenever possible, integrated with the Johns Bay archaeological datab…

  • Genetic analyses of multivariate fingertip dermatoglyphic factors and comparison with corresponding individual variables

    Open Access•T Reed, Robert S Young•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1979

Utilizing seven combinations of 40 fingertip variables identified with factor analysis, scores were calculated for each of the seven multivariate factors in 720 twins and 114 identical (MZ) twin pairs and their families. In comparison of variances of the factor scores in MZ versus fraternal (DZ) twins, a larger total variance was found for DZ twins, and subsequent estimates of genetic variance were not significant for two factors containing thumb…
