Case Report: Metabolic, inflammatory, and neurological improvements after a ketogenic diet in a woman with treatment-resistant schizophrenia and metabolic syndrome
We report the case of a 48-year-old woman with treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) and metabolic syndrome who completed a 5-week medical ketogenic diet (KD) in an inpatient setting. The patient was initially started on a 2.5:1 ratio of fat to combined carbohydrate and protein in grams, but her diet was modified on two occasions due to difficulty reaching consistent ketosis (βHB ≥0.5 mmol/L). Ketosis became more consistent throughout the study…
Case report: Ketogenic diet acutely improves cognitive function in patient with Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease
Ketogenic diets have a century-long history as a therapeutic tool to treat intractable epilepsy. Recently, a renewed interest in neuroketotherapeutics has arisen, with ketogenic diets being explored for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, as well as mental health conditions. Herein, we present a case report of a 47-year-old woman with Down syndrome diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and…
Early Robinson: Memory, History, and the Local
This essay discusses Kim Stanley Robinson's early fiction: short stories and novellas, Icehenge (1984), and the trilogy set in Orange County (1984-1990). Robinson's early fiction is varied, exploratory, and experimental. Discussion begins by sketching his take on some common genres and topics in sf (for instance, settlement off-Earth), and then focuses on his varied treatment of memory and history. Memory is unreliable or missing; history is unce…

Housing Market Spillovers: Evidence from the End of Rent Control in Cambridge, Massachusetts
We measure the capitalization of housing market externalities into residential housing values by studying the unanticipated elimination of stringent rent controls in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1995. Pooling data on the universe of assessed values and transacted prices of Cambridge residential properties between 1988 and 2005, we find that rent decontrol generated substantial, robust price appreciation at decontrolled units and nearby never-cont…
Orienting Under Load: Intrinsic Dynamics and Postural Affordances for Visual Perception
Orientation toward one's surroundings is necessary for prospective control of action, and constraints on orienting activity have consequences for animal survival. Physically coupled load is a constraint for humans wearing protective equipment (firefighters, soldiers, etc.). The consequences of load on postural affordances while transitioning to upright stance was used to quantify the impact of different soldier configurations. Eight participants …

Mission: The True Pentecostal Heritage as Illustrated in Early British AoG Thinking
Pneumatology has defined Pentecostalism since its inception and mission has been a constant aspect of its expression. I believe there has been a misrepresentation of the true nature and purpose of Spirit baptism especially an over emphasis on experience and particularly tongues. In this essay I briefly review the origins of Pentecostalism with an emphasis on GB&I AoG suggesting the past is vital in understanding Pentecostal heritage. I propose Mi…
Pattern Recognition: None of What We Do Here Is Ever Really Private
In this article William Gibson's Pattern Recognition is read as a response to issues raised by 9/11 that concern the power and obscenity of images. The main character has lost her father in mysterious circumstances at the fall of the towers, but the novel approaches the event obliquely, and it does not name Al Qaeda or terrorism at all, although it has a lot to tell us of the aftermath of the Cold War and of post-Soviet Russia. This article asses…
Mona Lisa Overdrive and the Prosthetic
As William Gibson’s Matrix Trilogy appeared, relations between the hard-boiled element and mystic events in cyberspace became increasingly strained, and the treatment of relations between subjects and objects more ambivalent and conflicted. Since Neuromancer, Gibson has turned increasingly to waiflike and vulnerable characters, and he has dramatized a conflict between the subject’s vulnerability to control and invasion, and the subject’s need for…
Philip K. Dick: Exhilaration and Terror of the Postmodern
Once the sole possession of fans and buffs, the science-fiction author Philip K Dick is now finding a much wider audience, as the success of the films Blade Runner and Minority Report shows. The kind of world he predicted in his funny and frightening novels and stories is coming closer to most of us: shifting realities, unstable relations, uncertain moralities. This book examines a wide range of Dick's work, including his short stories and posthu…
