  • Researchers’ perceptions of automating scientific research

    Open Access•David Douglas•ARTICLE•AI & Society•2025

Science is being transformed by the increasing capabilities of automation technologies and artificial intelligence (AI). Integrating AI and machine learning (ML) into scientific practice requires changing established research methods while maintaining a scientific understanding of research findings. Researchers are at the forefront of this change, but there is currently little understanding of how they are experiencing these upheavals in scientif…

  • Educational Trajectories and Professional Achievements: An Analysis of Doctors with Anid Postdoctoral Funding in Chile

Open Access•David Douglas, Ninoshka Fasce Cayo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Posthumanism•2025

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the educational trajectory and professional achievement of individuals who have obtained a doctoral degree and received postdoctoral funding from ANID in Chile. The results reveal that those who pursued studies abroad during their postgraduate education tend to achieve greater professional success, such as higher income, compared to their peers who studied in Chile. This finding suggests th…

  • Just trade-offs in a net-zero transition and social impact assessment

    Open Access•Yuwan Malakar, Andrea Walton et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Impact Assessment…•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 55

Countries around the world are prioritising net zero emissions to meet their Paris Agreement goals. The demand for social impact assessment (SIA) is likely to grow as this transition will require investments in decarbonisation projects with speed and at scale. There will be winners and losers of these projects because not everyone benefits the same; and hence, trade-offs are inevitable. SIAs, therefore, should focus on understanding how the risks…

  • Ethical responsibility and computational design: Bespoke surgical tools as an instructive case study

Open Access•David Douglas, Jacqueline Lacey et al.•ARTICLE•Ethics and Information Technology•2022

Computational design uses artificial intelligence (AI) to optimise designs towards user-determined goals. When combined with 3D printing, it is possible to develop and construct physical products in a wide range of geometries and materials and encapsulating a range of functionality, with minimal input from human designers. One potential application is the development of bespoke surgical tools, whereby computational design optimises a tool’s morph…

Public interest was such that, nearly sixty years after his death, there remained considerable demand for new insights into the man and his milieu. First published in 1890, his two-volume journal for the period 1825–32 immediately attracted press attention. One review observed that 'it shows us the ma…
