  • Hegel, Peirce and us

    Open Access•Michael Otte•ARTICLE•Revista Pesquisa Qualitativa•2020

Historically, our theme is situated within the triangle of three of Kant's students: Hegel (1770-1831), Bolzano (1781-1848) and Peirce (1839-1914). All three wanted to change Kant's strict separation of philosophy and science by developing a new conception of logic. Bolzano inaugurated the so-called linguistic turn of philosophy which became the guiding principle of all analytical philosophy (Dummett, 2014) and he opposed Hegel’s unity of concept…

  • O Que é um Texto? (Parte 1)

  • Bernard Bolzano: O conceitualismo e a intuição. Bernard Bolzano: conceptualism and intuition

Neste trab…

  • Style as a Historical Category

    Open Access•Michael Otte•ARTICLE•Science in Context•1991

The Argument In writing the history of science, the fluctuations between two meanings of the concept of style are of special interest: a simple or direct meaning of this concept referring to a means of expression and of presentation, and a philosophical interpretation of this term referring to “a world of objective spiritual order.” The last two chapters of this paper consider the perspective of the simple meaning of the concept, the first two ch…

  • Origins of the Program of “Arithmetization of Mathematics”

Hans Niels Jahnke, Michael Otte•CHAPTER•Social History of Nineteenth…•1981

Curiously enough, mathematics and its historiography are rather acutely conscious of the fact that the turn from the 18th to the 19th century marks a decisive turning point full of consequences in the development of science. Contem¬poraries in the 18th century believed that mathematics had come to an end of its growth. "A great upheaval in the sciences is imminent. In view of the present aspiration of the great minds, I should almost like to clai…
