  • The counter‐reparative impacts of South Africa's reparations gap

    Open Access•A S J Park, Madalena Santos•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Society•2022

This article offers a victim‐centric analysis of reparations relating to apartheid in South Africa. We identify a multi‐dimensional ‘reparations gap’, which refers to the disconnect between victims and the state in relation to reparations, including the meanings attributed to reparations, and the perception, evaluation, and experience of reparations. The reparations gap has had profoundly ‘counter‐reparative’ impacts on the relationship between v…

  • Canada, the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) and the flexibility of terror identities

Jeffrey Monaghan, Madalena Santos•ARTICLE•Critical Studies on Terrorism•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 23

Security governance practices are contingent on the imagination of future threats. The “war on terror” has produced a very narrow imagination of threats, almost singularly focused on suspect communities that are Arab, Muslim, or perceived to be Middle Eastern. Discussing how immigration practices in Canada have been influenced by counter-terrorism trends, we argue that “terror identities” are mutable and highly racialised imaginaries that cast in…

  • Palestinian narratives of resistance

    Madalena Santos•ARTICLE•Settler Colonial Studies•2018

This article focuses on the Freedom Theatre in Jenin, Palestine, to consider the Theatre’s project and performances as practices of creative resistance. It theorizes creative resistance to examine the Theatre as a mode of narrative performance against the logics and materiality of settler colonialism. In exploring this creative project, this study conceives of narratives as sites of struggle that are significant in the contestation and transforma…

  • Relations of ruling in the colonial present

    Open Access•Madalena Santos•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of Sociology•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 8

This article presents a categorical framework for the interrogation of power relations in the study and analysis of Israeli colonialism in Palestine. Following critical anti-racist feminist approaches, I highlight the relationality between race, class, and gender constructions that are crucial to colonial rule. Extending Chandra Mohanty’s (1991) reading of Dorothy Smith’s “relations of ruling”, I outline six intersecting categories of colonial pr…
