  • It’s Absolutely Intense, and I Love It!” A Qualitative Investigation of “Pegging” as Leisure

    David Williams, D J Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 9

In recent years, there has been growing interest among scholars in sexual practices as leisure behavior. The present study focused on "pegging," which is a new term for the sexual practice of biological females (vagina) anally penetrating (i.e. with strap-on devices, sex toys) biological males (penis) among heterosexual couples. Drawing on our connections within alternative sexuality communities, we interviewed 17 individuals (10 peggers and 7 pe…

  • Wanting sex and willing to kill

    Open Access•David Williams, D J Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Sciences & the Law•2021

Over the past several years, an online community of self‐described “incels,” referring to involuntary celibates, has emerged and gained increased public attention. Central to the guiding incel ideology and master narrative are violent misogynistic beliefs and an attitude of entitlement, based on male gender and social positioning, with respect to obtaining desired and often illusory sexual experiences. While violence and hate speech within the in…

  • Is Serial Sexual Homicide a Compulsion, Deviant Leisure, or Both? Revisiting the Case of Ted Bundy

    David Williams, D J Williams•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 52

Serial homicide for personal gratification is often commonly assumed to be driven by an underlying psychiatric compulsion, characterized by loss of control. This article briefly summarizes the behavioral science literature on serial homicide before then focusing on such behavior as a potential form of deviant leisure, which, because of the leisure criterion of relative autonomy, presents challenges to assumptions that killing is primarily an unco…

  • Getting off on sex research

    Open Access•J N Thomas, David Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 22

In this commentary, we show how self-disclosure can help elucidate the ways that the sexual desires of sex researchers can and do affect their research. We demonstrate this self-disclosure by exploring how our own sexual desires have affected some of our past research through influencing research project choices, methodological choices, methodological interactions, and research findings and conclusions. We propose that sex research of all kinds w…

    David Williams, D J Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work•2013•Cited by: 21•References: 1

Social work, in addition to many other professions, remains very concerned with resolving and preventing various problems associated with sexuality. Social workers commonly may be involved in treating victims and perpetrators of sexual abuse, dealing with client personal issues concerning sexuality and sexual functioning, and advocating for policies that empower and protect individuals who are vulnerable. Sociosexual issues are serious and may af…

  • Blending Voices

    Staci Jensen-Hart, D J Williams•ARTICLE•Journal of Teaching in Social Work•2010•Cited by: 6•References: 8

Critical reflection is important to vital process issues within social work practice; thus, it warrants attention in teaching and supervisory contexts. Autoethnography is a newer qualitative research methodology that uses the experiences of the author/researcher to extend social science understanding (Sparkes, 2000). In this article, the authors use autoethnography to frame critical reflection as a process of exploring social work knowledge and i…

  • Deviant Leisure

    David Williams, D J Williams•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2009•Cited by: 19•References: 14

This article calls for a more thorough exploration of the concept of deviant leisure. Although deviant leisure often relies on psychiatric discourse as a primary explanation for participation, many forms of deviant leisure cannot be explained convincingly through accounts that focus on psychopathological motivations. Examples discussed herein include consensual sexual sadomasochism, self-identified human vampires, and radical body modification. S…

  • Mesolithic Sites at Malham Tarn and Great Close Mire, North Yorkshire

    Open Access•D J Williams, J A Richardson et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1987•References: 7

The occurrence of mesolithic artefacts around Malham Tarn and Great Close Mire has been noted from the 1920s onwards. Pollen analysis at Tarn Moss to the west of Malham Tarn in the 1950s indicated that forest clearance had begun during Zone VI (c. 7000–5500 bc). Between 1972 and 1982, five prolific flint sites and a sixth, minor site were located in this area. The sites are of ‘Narrow Blade’ affinities and may have formed a summer base camp for h…
