Open Access•Muralidhar M Kulkarni, Manpreet Bains et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2025

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use has resulted in a staggering number of illnesses and premature deaths worldwide. India has the world's second-highest level of tobacco consumption. The study aimed to explore the reasons of initiation among adolescents and understand community stakeholders' perceptions about the current tobacco control policies and challenges faced in implementing it for youth along with future recommendations. METHODS: Focus Group Discuss…

  • Awareness, attitudes and practices relating to Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control among members of tobacco control committees in a southern Indian state

Praveen Kumar, Veena G Kamath et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2023

Awareness of international guidance designed to prevent the TI influence on health policy among policymakers in this Indian state is low. Respondents from non-health departments were less aware of TI CSR. Those in health departments were more receptive towards taking a TI role in the future

  • Impact of Smoking and Vaping in Films on Smoking and Vaping Uptake in Adolescents: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Open Access•Zeinab M Hassanein, Alex B Barker et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2022

Prevention of smoking uptake in young people is an essential public health target. We have previously reported a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of exposure to smoking imagery in films on the risk of smoking uptake in young people. This study updates that review, and includes studies of the effects of exposure to media vaping imagery on vaping uptake. Four electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and IBSS) were searched …

  • Developing a novel e-cigarette regulatory and policy control scale: Results from the European Union

Open Access•Ajay Shah, John Britton et al.•ARTICLE•Drugs Education Prevention and…•2022

Background: E-cigarette regulations vary considerably between countries though a standard approach for comparing regulatory frameworks does not exist. Additionally, there is no evidence on whether regulatory variations are associated with differences in e-cigarette use and smoking cessation. This study aims to develop a regulatory scale to measure and compare e-cigarette regulations between European Union countries and investigate whether scores …

  • Population exposure to alcohol and junk food advertising during the 2018 Fifa world cup: Implications for public health

Open Access•Khaldoon Alfayad, Rachael L Murray et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

UK advertising legislation and broadcasting regulations intended to prevent exposure to alcohol and HFSS imagery and advertising in UK television was circumvented completely by sponsorship arrangements in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Preventing this exposure therefore requires revision of existing advertising and broadcasting controls to include sponsorship

  • Exposure to Second-Hand Smoke in Public Places and Barriers to the Implementation of Smoke-Free Regulations in The Gambia: A Population-Based Survey

Open Access•Bai Cham, Noreen Dadirai Mdege et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Despite existing smoke-free regulations, reported exposure to second-hand smoke remains high in public places in The Gambia. The Ministry of Health should continue to strengthen their advocacy and sensitization programs to ensure smoke-free regulations are fully implemented. Some population subgroups are at a higher risk of exposure and could be targeted by interventions; and settings where these subgroups are exposed should be targeted by enforc…

  • Was the implementation of standardised tobacco packaging legislation in England associated with changes in smoking prevalence? A segmented regression analysis between 2006 and 2019

Magdalena Opazo Bretón, John Britton et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2021

This is the first independent study demonstrating that implementation of standardised packaging was associated with a reduction in smoking in England which occurred in anticipation of, rather than after, full policy implementation. It appears that the odds of being a smoker were affected by the prospect of the move to standardised packs and accompanying legislation

  • Exposure to tobacco imagery in popular films and the risk of ever smoking among children in southern India

    Open Access•Muralidhar M Kulkarni, Veena G Kamath et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2020

In this cross-sectional study, children in southern India who had seen films containing tobacco imagery are no more likely to smoke than those who had not, indicating that the tobacco control messaging mandated by Indian law may be attenuating the effect of tobacco imagery in films on smoking uptake

  • The Relation Between Tobacco Tax Structure and Corruption in European Union Member States

Open Access•Ajay Shah, Katie Eminson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Background : Taxing tobacco products is one of the most effective tobacco control measures, and most countries apply a combination of specific taxes, which comprise a fixed amount per cigarette or gram of hand-rolling tobacco, and ad valorem taxes, which increase in proportion to the cost of the product. Since specific taxes reduce price differentials across tobacco product ranges while ad valorem taxes amplify them, we hypothesised that tobacco …

  • I Felt Welcomed in Like They’re a Little Family in There, I Felt Like I Was Joining a Team or Something’: Vape Shop Customers’ Experiences of E-Cigarette Use, Vape Shops and the Vaping Community

    Open Access•Tessa Langley, Rebecca Bell-Williams et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Background : Specialist electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) shops, known as vape shops, provide access to a less harmful alternative to smoking. This study aimed to understand customers' experiences of vaping and vape shops, and the extent to which smoking cessation advice is and should be provided in these shops. Methods : We conducted telephone interviews with 22 customers recruited in vape shops in the East Midlands region of England. Interview…

  • Changes in roll-your-own tobacco and cigarette sales volume and prices before, during and after plain packaging legislation in the UK

Open Access•Magdalena Opazo Bretón, John Britton et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2019

New legislation resulted in higher prices for RYO and manufactured cigarettes. However, sales volumes of RYO continued to increase throughout the study period, perhaps because RYO remains a less expensive means of smoking tobacco

  • Assessment of tobacco imagery and compliance with tobacco-free rules in popular Indian films

    Open Access•Muralidhar M Kulkarni, Veena G Kamath et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2019

Tobacco content was common in films classified as suitable for viewing by children, more among regional than national languages. Compliance with tobacco control laws was low. Stricter enforcement of tobacco-free film rules will protect children and adolescents from exposure to tobacco use on screen

  • Comparison between Online and Offline Price of Tobacco Products Using Novel Datasets

Open Access•Magdalena Opazo Bretón, John Britton et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Price of tobacco products has traditionally been relevant both for the industry, to respond to policy changes, and for governments, as an effective tobacco control measure. However, monitoring prices across a wide range of brands and brand variants requires access to expensive commercial sales databases. This study aims to investigate the comparability of average tobacco prices from two commercial sources and an in-house monitoring database which…

  • Cost-effectiveness of a complex intervention to reduce children’s exposure to second-hand smoke in the home

Open Access•Charlotte Renwick, Qi Wu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

  • Alcohol audio-visual content in formula 1 television broadcasting

Open Access•Alex B Barker, John Britton et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

Audio-visual alcohol content, including branding, was highly prevalent footage of 2017 F1 races broadcast during peak viewing times in the UK. This content is likely to be a significant driver of alcohol consumption among children and adolescents

  • Vape shops: Who uses them and what do they do

Open Access•Julie Pattinson, Sarah Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

The majority of vape shop customers are vapers who have quit smoking. Shop staff play a central role in providing customers with product information, and many provide smoking cessation advice. Further research is needed to investigate the potential for smoking cessation interventions in vape shops, including the extent to which these would appeal to non-vapers

  • Carlsberg alibi marketing in the Uefa euro 2016 football finals: Implications of Probably inappropriate alcohol advertising

Open Access•Rachael L Murray, Magdalena Opazo Bretón et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

Alibi marketing achieved significant advertising coverage during the final seven EURO 2016 championship games, particularly to children. Since 'Probably' is registered by Carlsberg as a wordmark this advertising appears to contravene the Loi Evin, though Carlsberg have defended their marketing actions

  • Content analysis of tobacco content in UK television

    Open Access•Alex B Barker, Kathy Whittamore et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2018

These findings are virtually unchanged from our earlier analysis of programme content from 2010. Audiovisual tobacco content remains common in UK television programmes

  • Population exposure to smoking and tobacco branding in the UK reality show ‘Love Island’

    Alex B Barker, Alexander B Barker et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2018

Despite advertising legislation and broadcasting regulations intended to protect children from smoking imagery in UK television, series 3 of Love Island delivered millions of general and branded tobacco impressions both to children and adults in the UK. More stringent controls on tobacco content in television programmes are urgently needed

  • Status of implementation of Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) in Ghana: A qualitative study

    Open Access•Ellis Owusu-Dabo, Ellis Owusu‐Dabo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

Whilst Ghana has ratified the FCTC, there is an urgent need for action to pass a national tobacco control bill into law to enable it to implement the treaty, sustain tobacco control efforts and prevent Ghana's further involvement in the global tobacco epidemic

  • Smoking prevalence in the European Union: A comparison of national and transnational prevalence survey methods and results

Open Access•Ilze Bogdanovica, Fiona Godfrey et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2010

Measurements of the prevalence of smoking, the biggest avoidable public health threat in the European Union, are highly discrepant within countries between national and European Commission survey estimates. Monitoring national smoking prevalence on a regular basis, using standardised methods in representative population samples, is an urgent priority for the EU

  • Support for smoke-free policy, and awareness of tobacco health effects and use of smoking cessation therapy in a developing country

    Open Access•Ellis Owusu-Dabo, Ellis Owusu‐Dabo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

  • The forgotten smoker: A qualitative study of attitudes towards smoking, quitting, and tobacco control policies among continuing smokers

Open Access•Navneet Uppal, Lion Shahab et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Continuing smokers' attitudes towards smoking and quitting suggests that research and policy need to focus on increasing smokers' implicit motivation to quit smoking, even for those who classified themselves as having high motivation to quit. Targeted information and further education about Stop Smoking Services is required to increase uptake

  • Tobacco display and brand communication at the point of sale: Implications for adolescent smoking behaviour

Open Access•Dionysis Spanopoulos, John Britton et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2013

Exposure to and awareness of PoS displays and brands in displays were associated with smoking susceptibility. The association between PoS display exposure and smoking susceptibility was predominantly due to exposure in small shops. These findings suggest that a one-off, comprehensive tobacco display ban is the recommended approach for countries considering a display ban

  • Tobacco imagery on prime time UK television

Open Access•Ailsa Lyons, Allan Mcneill et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2013

Television programming is a source of significant exposure of youth to tobacco imagery, before and after the watershed. Tobacco branding is particularly common in Coronation Street, a soap opera popular among youth audiences. More stringent controls on tobacco in prime time television therefore have the potential to reduce the uptake of youth smoking in the UK

  • Smoking in cars in England: A study of school students in an English city

Open Access•Ilze Bogdanovica, Lisa Szatkowski et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Absence of smoke free rules in a family car and travelling in a car where smoking was allowed was relatively common among secondary school students, was strongly related to social disadvantage and a higher risk of smoking experimentation. Measures to prevent such exposure are therefore indicated

  • Use of varenicline for smoking cessation treatment in UK primary care: An association rule mining analysis

Open Access•Yue Huang, Sarah Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Varenicline is being underused in healthy smokers, or in older smokers, and in those with psychotic disorders or dementia. Since varenicline is probably the most effective available single cessation therapy, this study identifies under-treatment of substantial public health significance
