Academic freedom in perilous times: Remarks at July 21, 2007 Symposium honoring Professor Jacklyn Cock at the University of Witwatersrand
This paper presents an observation of Academic Freedom in the United States and South Africa. It compares academic freedom in both countries drawing on what is referred to as the Big Five in the United States. It suggests that the threat to academic freedom in the United States is from outside the university whereas such threats come from inside the academe in the South African case

Diversity and disadvantage: Feminist perspectives from the USA and South Africa
This article is concerned with how the current preoccupation with understanding ‘difference’ has displaced concerns with disadvantage and inequality. It argues that a central issue in both the USA and South Africa is how to address disadvantage and link diversity to unity. The article concludes that it is important to assert the transformative potential of feminism at a time when many define equality conservatively to mean integration into the ex…
