    Open Access•Daina Eglitis, Daina S Eglitis et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 22

This article takes a sociological perspective on the phenomenon of national myth making in collective memory. It develops an original theoretical concept, the ghost hero. The ghost hero, we posit, is a reinvented historical actor who, despite being implicated in acts of moral or legal turpitude, is elevated and venerated within national communities. In building a theoretical frame, we use two historical cases: Latvian aviator and Nazi-era collabo…

    Daina Eglitis, Daina S Eglitis•ARTICLE•Journal of Baltic Studies•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This article constructs a picture of change and stasis in cultures of gender in Latvia and theorizes the effect of these gender cultures on practices of family formation in the early post-communist period. Drawing in particular on women's perspectives, it offers an analysis grounded in gender and culture of the decline of marriage and the rise of non-marital births. The end of communism in Eastern Europe ushered in an era of markets and modernity. Post-communist capitalism has also wrought stratification with intensified upward and downward socio-economic mobility. Examining the case of Latvia, we offer an analysis of one of post-communist capitalism's most apparent effects: the creation of a broad and diverse mass of economically disadvantaged inhabitants.
