  • Investigating relationships among strontium, barium, and seasonality in wild baboons

    Open Access•Maya Bharatiya, C Austin et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 69

Geochemical profiles of Australopithecus africanus and baboon teeth show fluctuating trace elements, possibly reflecting seasonal diets. Here we use laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometric measurements of calcium‐normalized strontium and barium ratios (Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca) and ion microprobe analyses of oxygen isotopes (δ 18 O) to contrast elemental changes with seasonal rainfall in wild baboons. We employ 16 teeth from 11 South …

  • Confronting China: US Defense Policy in an Era of Great Power Competition

    James H Anderson, Daniel R Green•BOOK•Confronting China•2024

Informed by senior policymakers with extensive expertise in defense, this book provides a comprehensive regional and functional perspective on US policy toward the People's Republic of China. Confronting Chinaaddresses the central security questions of our generation: How best can the United States deter Chinese aggression and win the peace? China's pursuit of global hegemony reflects a patient yet determined effort to reshape the international o…

  • How teeth record and attenuate seasonal signals

  • Past rainfall patterns in Southeast Asia revealed by microanalysis of δ18O values in human teeth

Open Access•Petra Vaiglova, Josephine Avila et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 9

Variations in human subsistence and settlement patterns have been documented at Holocene archaeological sites across Island and Mainland Southeast Asia. Although climate is frequently invoked as a causal mechanism underlying this variation, direct evidence of ancient rainfall variability on the scale of human lifetimes has thus far been elusive. Here we use a novel time-resolute method for in situ measurement of human tooth enamel δ18O values (n …

  • Permanent signatures of birth and nursing initiation are chemically recorded in teeth

    Open Access•T M Smith, C Austin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2022•Cited by: 8•References: 13

In 2013 we presented a model for identifying nursing behavior from primate teeth based on rapid postnatal concentration changes in the non-essential trace element barium. Here we leverage the permanent neonatal (birth) line in the enamel of several dozen primate M1 cusps to compare pre- and postnatal trends in barium, zinc, strontium, and oxygen, as each element is believed to evince developmental patterning. Barium and zinc are the most consiste…

  • Fallujah Redux: The Anbar Awakening and the Struggle with Al-Qaeda

    William F Mullen, Daniel R Green et al.•BOOK•Fallujah Redux•2014

Once the city was finally cleared, U.S. forces settled into the routine of waging a lowintensity warfare campaign against insurgent forces and trying to set the conditions for Iraqi government control. Even though U.S. forces were winning tactically, they struggled with a population that still strongly supported the insurgency. By the middle of 2007, four years after the initial invasion of Iraq, the city of Fallujah and its surrounding countrysi…

  • A New Strategy to Defeat Al-Qaeda in Yemen

  • The Fallujah awakening: A Case Study in Counter-Insurgency

    Daniel R Green•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2010•Cited by: 4

The successful pacification of Fallujah in 2007 during the Anbar Awakening movement was due to the coordinated efforts of US and Iraqi forces to physically and psychologically separate the people from the insurgency. Efforts along security, political, and development lines along with a robust tribal effort eliminated the armed insurgency and set the basis for victory in the area. But a synchronized delivery of these resources was insufficient to …

  • The Effects of Member Gender and Constituency Characteristics on Southern Congressional Voting Behavior, 1972–2000

    Open Access•Daniel R Green•ARTICLE•Politics & Policy•2003•References: 13

Research on Southern congressional voting behavior has largely dealt with the effects of constituency changes on roll‐call voting. Few studies have taken into account the changing attributes of the legislators themselves, such as gender, in determining what influences voting behavior. The present study has built upon this limited research by determining that while a member's gender does play a statistically significant role in explaining voting b…
