  • Neue Kriege, die Bundeswehr und der Einsatz

    Martin Hofbauer, Martin Rink•ARTICLE•Militärgeschichtliche Zeitschrift•2025

Contemporaries already described the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and German reunification in the following year as a turning point. While this was linked to expectations of a global peace order in the northern hemisphere, new conflicts emerged simultaneously in Africa, Asia, the Balkans, and the peripheral regions of the post-Soviet states, which soon became collectively known as new wars. At the same time, the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces…

  • Formen- und Funktionswandel der Bundeswehr in der deutschen Sicherheitsarchitektur seit 1990

    Thorsten Loch, Martin Rink•ARTICLE•Militärgeschichtliche Zeitschrift•2025

This special issue offers an insight into a research project at the Bundeswehr Center for Military History and Social Sciences on the history of the German armed forces after 1990. The articles presented here approach this history of the Bundeswehr in the »era of foreign deployments« (» Ära der Auslandseinsätze «) from different perspectives. However, the starting point is no longer the foreign deployment itself. Instead, the project aims to shed…

    Martin Rink•BOOK•Die Bundeswehr 1950/55-1989•2015

The Bundeswehr was established in 1955. This volume surveys in condensed form the compromises that had to be found due to Germany’s military history as well as the impacts exerted by the Cold War up to 1989/90. The work offers an expert synopsis to both professional historians and lay readers, featuring maps, figures, and primary source citations.

  • The German wars of liberation 1807-1815

    Martin Rink•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2014•Cited by: 1

In the Age of Napoleon, ‘small wars’ and ‘revolutionary war’ were closely connected. There were, however, different strands of this phenomenon: speaking professionally, conservative officers condemned small wars as an irregular regression to previous less disciplined forms of warfare. The Prussian state continually tried to discipline and regulate spontaneous risings. Yet the irregular character of small wars offered the opportunities for a less …

  • The Partisan’s Metamorphosis

    Open Access•Martin Rink•ARTICLE•War in History•2010•Cited by: 6

The unreliability of the ‘mercenary’ is legendary. However, this reputation is distorted, and the same is true of the mercenary’s prima facie antagonist, the ‘partisan’. In the eighteenth century the latter term was typically used to designate a regular detachment leader employed in skirmishes. Here, military action and military economic principles had survived, which gave the fighters a seemingly more archaic appearance than the prevailing patte…

  • Das Heer 1950 bis 1970

    Helmut R Hammerich, Dieter H Kollmer et al.•BOOK•Heer 1950 Bis 1970•2006
