  • Multimodal stance-taking and ideological alignment in online far-right anti-immigration discourse

Open Access•Sahar Rasoulikolamaki, Noor Aqsa Nabila Mat Isa et al.•ARTICLE•Language in Society•2026

With rising political polarisation, far-right digital spaces have become fertile ground for amplifying xenophobic discourse. Adopting a critical multimodal analytic approach to stance analysis, we examined anti-immigration posts and comments related to the US context in the QAnon+ Telegram channel from January 2021 to October 2022 to show that radicalisation in this context is not merely a matter of extreme opinions, but of the performative multi…

  • Two forgotten Anglo-Catholic pioneer priests

    Open Access•John Hardy, John G Hardy•ARTICLE•Theology•2024

Peter Green (Salford) and Charles Jenkinson (Leeds) were Anglo-Catholic parsons who devotedly worked in northern England either side of the Second World War. Are they models for today? Green prioritized 'intentional evangelism'. Jenkinson was a Christian socialist and Modernist who 'meddled in politics' as a city councillor: his priority was housing reform. Green remained a parish priest; Jenkinson moved into new town development. Despite their s…

  • Overheard in passing: Talking weather, funerals and implicit religion

    Open Access•John Hardy•ARTICLE•Theology•2017

Writing 'from the parish', I seek to apply Edward Bailey's definition of 'implicit religion': a person's priorities, the moral commitments that 'bring them to life'. Can clerical repartee about weather and about funerals prompt 'disclosure situations' - conversations that disclose a party's private passions, their 'implicitly religious' proclivities? 'Raw material' for such exchanges includes weather lore and funeral reminiscences. Anecdotal evid…

  • Martial theology in glass

    Open Access•John Hardy•ARTICLE•Theology•2016

Memorial stained glass at a Cambridgeshire parish church displays a retributive, quasi-Deuteronomic theology of war. Consistent with contemporary ecclesiastical attitudes, martial images depict 'apostate' Germany in contradistinction to 'righteous' Britain: German cruelty contrasts with allied compassion ('their' weaponry, 'our' material and spiritual consolations). Pastoral images point to post-war peace and agricultural abundance: economic rene…

  • Panjwai: A tale of two Coins in Afghanistan

Paul Lushenko, John Hardy et al.•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 17

The US Army has two approaches to counterinsurgency operations in Afghanistan. One is hard, or combat-focused, and the other is soft, or development-focused. This study examines two US Army task forces deployed to Panjwai District, Afghanistan from 2012 to 2013. CTF 4-9 and 1-38 offer a meaningful comparison because they pursued these contrasting approaches among the same population and against the same enemy at the same time and place. The study…

  • Mourners' memories

    Open Access•John Hardy•ARTICLE•Theology•2015

An Anglican cleric's funeral tributes are commonly based on the recollections of mourners. I illustrate some of 'my' mourners' memories, and their conversational idiom - the prevalence of everyday vocabulary. Following W. S. F. Pickering's pioneering investigation of religious life and ordinary theology in 1950s Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, UK, I propose that such reminiscences provide a source for popular attitudes; they reflect a persistent 'fam…

  • Mild cognitive impairment – beyond controversies, towards a consensus: Report of the International Working Group on Mild Cognitive Impairment

Open Access•Bengt Winblad, Katie Palmer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Internal Medicine•2004

The First Key Symposium was held in Stockholm, Sweden, 2–5 September 2003. The aim of the symposium was to integrate clinical and epidemiological perspectives on the topic of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). A multidisciplinary, international group of experts discussed the current status and future directions of MCI, with regard to clinical presentation, cognitive and functional assessment, and the role of neuroimaging, biomarkers and genetics. A…
