Dear Dad: I’m still trying to make sense of some history
This letter remembers the writer's father, considering the disquieted contexts of his life and early death. These contexts connect to histories and conditions far more extensive than any individual life, and suggest difficult questions about inheritance, relationality, aftermath, settler being, and more, with which the writer continues to grapple
For a Cooperative “Smart” City Yet to Come: Place-Based Knowledge, Commons, and Prospects for Inclusive Municipal Processes From Seattle, Washington
This article explores possibilities for cooperative, equitable, and participatory forms of smart urbanism. We begin by outlining orientations that emphasize the heterogeneity of economic and urban life and center the capacities and priorities of constituencies that currently are often not well served by urban planning and information-gathering processes. We then further iterate these sensibilities in relation to two examples from community organi…
Outside the Wage: Seeing Politics and Possibilities with Critical Comparisons
Emerging debates on the contemporary reconfigurations of work question previous understandings of the relationships among and between waged, unwaged, and reproductive labour, situated processes of value formation and/or enclosure, and the constitution and limits of contemporary capitalism. Taking Cindi Katz's notion of countertopographies and Gillian Hart's notion of relational comparison as inspirations, this Symposium draws attention to new and…
The Mixed Potential of Salvage Commoning: Crisis and Commoning Practices in Washington, DC and New York City
This paper considers how and to what ends commoning practices can take shape in direct response to the spectres and/or realities of eroding resources (we focus especially on public resources) within iterations of what we term “salvage commoning”. We show how, in such contexts, commoning practices may potentially alleviate but also potentially (re)produce inequities, exclusions, and resource retractions. To illustrate, we draw upon two examples: p…

Extending the conversation on socially engaged geographic visualization: Representing spatial inequality in Buffalo, New York
This paper is situated at the intersections among GIS and geovisualization, critical social theory, and urban studies. It presents an analysis of housing segregation and unequal food and transportation access in Buffalo, New York. We demonstrate how the representation and examination of this socially complex multi-scalar issue benefits from deliberate, reflexive conversation between different critical social-spatial epistemologies. We begin with …
Warped by the field: The gravity of the margins on West Forty-Sixth Street
Reflecting on a recently completed ethnographic research project, I try to understand how things that may seem marginal to my central question nonetheless remain active within my arguments in unanticipated ways. I begin with an overview of my original research aims and activities before presenting eight marginal examples from fieldwork. I conclude with a meditation on the epistemic force that the marginal must be understood to exert on projects o…
Marginalia, or the knowledge of excess
Notes1. The ‘we’ here extends well beyond the authors, who owe an enormous debt to Manissa McCleave Maharawal and David Spataro, peers at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Over the course of several years, they organized numerous ‘Marginalia’ events at Blue Stockings bookstore. These events featured readings of poetry, creative writing, excerpts from field notes, and other texts by numerous authors including Christian Anders…
