Who decides how women travel? Gender, authority and transportation in Hyderabad, India
This paper examines how authority is constituted and negotiated in the context of women’s everyday transportation in Hyderabad, the capital city of the newly formed Indian state of Telangana. Drawing on in-depth interviews with individuals in perceived positions of authority, this paper explores the production of authority in and around transportation, an issue that is a key mechanism in the process of state-building. Geographers have examined how sacred spaces are made spiritually meaningful through embodied practice.
