    Open Access•Donald Mcneill, Kim Mcnamara•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•2011•Cited by: 5•References: 19

This paper develops the idea of the ‘building biography’ in order to examine the ontology of large city hotels as they undergo redevelopment. The paper draws on archival research on one of Sydney’s most famed hotels, The Australia, exploring how it was periodically repositioned by management and shareholders within the changing time‐spaces of Sydney’s urban economy between its opening in 1891 and its demolition in 1971. We highlight the importanc…

  • Hotels as Civic Landmarks, Hotels as Assets: The case of Sydney's Hilton

    Donald Mcneill, Kim Mcnamara•ARTICLE•Australian Geographer•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 8

In this paper, we examine the role that hotels play in the urban economies of central business districts (CBDs). To illustrate this, we explore the biography of the Sydney Hilton, an iconic modernist building which opened in 1975 and was recently totally refurbished and rebranded. We argue that hotels can be understood as civic landmarks, where localised business elites and the local state coalesce to ensure their successful construction, and whe…

  • Publicising private lives: Celebrities, Image Control and the Reconfiguration of Public Space

    Kim Mcnamara•ARTICLE•Social & Cultural Geography•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 3

The nature of contemporary celebrity demands the negotiation of publicness and privacy. Given the increasingly intrusive presence of the paparazzi, entertainment media, and fans (from obsessed ‘stalkers’ to well-wishers), celebrities need to regulate but also publicise their ‘front stage’ public persona. While this is usually achieved with a degree of comfort, at certain times their space is threatened. Through a case study of the 2003 court case…
