  • Trojan Horses Facing the Mirror: A Comparison between Religious Anti-Environmental Movement Organizations in the US and Brazil

Renan William Dos Santos, Laurel Kearns•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Religion…•2024•Cited by: 1

We examine the appropriations of stewardship ethics by religious anti-environmental movement organizations (RAEMOs). Based on a qualitative analysis of promotional materials, we highlight similar framing alignment processes carried out by two RAEMOs in different contexts: the US Cornwall Alliance and the Brazilian Institute Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira (IPCO). Traditions of ecological…

  • The Role of Religions in Activism

Laurel Kearns•BOOK•Oxford handbook of climate change…•2011

Although scientists present facts, in relation to climate change, often depressing and alarming ones, it is religious traditions and leaders that can motivate people to change and can offer hope in the face of such facts. As this article illustrates, religious leaders and organizations can make a difference by mobilizing followers and framing the issue in moral terms; however, they can also stymie action on climate change through their vigorous r…

As a portrait of the boundaries of this movement, the paper focuses in detail on Christian stewardship and creation spirituality. It then examines religious environm…
