The role of engineering advice in policy making: The case of energy policy in the UK
Engineers have a crucial role to play in tackling the grand challenges faced by our societies, for example innovations in energy production to mitigate against climate change. Despite this crucial role, there is a paucity of academic work on engineering advice for policy makers. This article examines the three existing works on engineering advice and two adjacent areas of research – Engineering Studies and policy making in the UK government – to …
Forum: Youth as Boundary Actors in International Studies
Youth represent a great part of humanity and have always been active and intriguing political actors, yet youth remain sidelined in international studies. Issues of social identity perception and its consequences have been embraced by post-positivist approaches in international studies. Yet, while race, gender, and class challenges are shaking the discipline, age is a key research gap. To fill this gap, the conceptual departure of this forum is t…
Youth in the Global South, Southern Theory and Global Youth Studies: Howard Williamson in Conversation with the Editors of The Oxford Handbook of Global South Youth Studies
Morphing between the margins: How youth make a living across multiple spaces in South Africa and beyond
Young South Africans regularly generate livelihoods on the move, as they morph across a mainstream economic field and two translocal sub-fields. While a field implies sets of relations operating under common conditions, translocal sub-fields are local spaces of exchange and practice, where resources are utilised, in a relationship with other linked spaces. In South Africa, the mainstream economic field largely consists of an urban labour market w…
Minding the Just Gap: Perceptions of the Legitimacy of Income Inequality from the South African Social Attitudes Survey
This article explores perceptions of the legitimacy of income inequality in South Africa, looking at the 'just income gap': salaries considered to be fair for occupations at opposite ends of the status continuum. Data from the 2009 and 2016 waves of the South African Social Attitudes Survey (SASAS) were analysed. Findings on perceived actual and ethical wages for five occupations indicated that, although South Africans feel that those on the low …
Youth and the future of work: Introduction
This editorial introduces and frames the six papers of this special section. It begins by proposing that youth unemployment needs to be understood in relation to a range of patterns of “getting by” in the global south. We suggest that the many practices of work, including informal ones, discussed in the collection do not attest to a society in “need of development” but rather point towards the future of work, here and elsewhere. While taking tran…
Dancing on the ceiling: Young Black entrepreneurs leveraging capitals across sub-fields in Johannesburg tourism
Rather than framing the South African youth unemployment debate in deficit terms, highlighting a lack of skills, educational and economic growth, this study focuses on creative practices and aspirations of Black youth in the Johannesburg tour- ism industry. This group’s activities included tours of former migrant hostels, derelict buildings and township bicycle tours. These young entrepreneurs were placed at a fault line between township and main…
The Oxford Handbook of Global South Youth Studies
Ninety percent of the world’s youth live in Africa, Latin America and the developing countries of Asia. Despite this, the field of Youth Studies, like many others, is dominated by the knowledge economy of the Global North. To address these geopolitical inequalities of knowledge, The Oxford Handbook of Global South Youth Studies offers a contribution from Southern scholars to remake Youth Studies from its current state, that universalizes Northern…
An investigation into the factors affecting player development within each phase of the academy pathway in english football academies
The purpose of this research project is to build upon the limited base of academic research into the development of players through the academy pathway in English Football Academies. The unique focus of this study is to investigate the limited academic area of player development specific to each phase of the academy pathway; Foundation Phase, Youth Development Phase and Professional Development Phase. The research was conducted utilizing a questi…
Disentangled, decentred and democratised: Youth Studies for the global South
Youth Studies’ theories often assume universal generalisability despite rarely making the global South, or its youthful populations, ontologies, values and politics the focus of research. This paper grapples with the idea of a Youth Studies ‘for’ the global South, questioning whether theories/approaches that centre on the global North can be usefully applied in the global South, how and for what purpose. After describing two mainstream domains of…

Reconciling Indo-European Syllabification
In Reconciling Indo-European Syllabification, Adam Cooper brings together two seemingly disparate phenomena associated with Indo-European syllable structure: the heterosyllabic treatment of medial consonant clusters, which tolerates CVC syllables, and the right-hand vocalization of sonorants, which ostensibly avoids them. Operating from a perspective that is simultaneously empirical, theoretical, and historical in nature, he establishes their com…

The drivers, impact and value of Case: A short history from the inside
When a 2007 peer review of the English Government Department of Culture, Media and Sport's policy-making capability suggested the department's research should collaborate more with the bodies it funds, it responded by establishing the Culture and Sport Evidence (CASE) programme. CASE was funded jointly with the Arts Council England, English Heritage, Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and Sport England. To bring these five bodies together to…
Through a different lens’: Snaps of a soccer photovoice project in Lavender Hill, Cape Town
This case study describes a photovoice project which took place at Hillwood Primary School in Lavender Hill, Cape Town. ‘Photovoice’ utilises participant produced photographs as an integral component of the research process (Oliffe & Bottorff, 2007). Fifteen learners between the ages of 11 and 13 years-old received five photography workshops and were then given disposable cameras in order to document soccer in their neighbourhood, an area plagued…
