Veterans, the Vietnam Era, and Marital Dissolution
Event history analysis of 2,241 married males from James Coleman's Adolescent Society study adds to the evidence that military service, even in the Vietnam era, has not been a significant factor in the breakup of veterans' marriages. Rather, veterans' risk of divorce in the fifteen years ending in 1973 hinged on some of the same factors that affect divorce probabilities anywhere and at any time, such as education, religion, number of children, an…

Fort Ritchie Army Garrison in Cascade, Maryland, slated for closure as part of the 1995 base realignment and closure (BRAC) round, officially ceased military operations on September 30, 1998. More than eight years later, a confluence of circumstances had prevented its reuse, and the community had yet to benefit from reuse efforts. Racial Differences in the Impact of Military Service on the Socioeconomic Status of Women Veterans
This article investigates the impact of military service on the socioeconomic status of African American and white, non-Hispanic women veterans of the post-1973 U.S. allvolunteer force. Earnings and family income are used as measures of socioeconomic status. Data from the 1990 Public Use Microdata Sample L were used in this analysis. In this article the authors analyse and extend Segal's theory of factors affecting women's military participation cross-nationally through a literature review on three very different countries, Australia, Mexico and Zimbabwe. The Impact of Military Presence in Local Labor Markets on the Employment of Women
This article uses Public Use Microsample (PUMS) data drawn from the 1990 census to explore the relationship between military presence, defined as the percentage of the local labor force in the active-duty armed forces, and women's employment and earnings across local labor market areas (LMAs) in the United States. This article analyzes the effects of organizational support for families on the organizational commitment of male enlisted Army soldiers and their wives. Self-Selection and Parental Socioeconomic Status as Determinants of the Values of West Point Cadets
This study examines the relationship between parental socioeconomic status (SES) and values in an entry-level class of cadets at the United States Military Academy in an exploration of the value bases of our future military elite. Following Kohn's model of social structure and values, we hypothesized relationships between parental SES and cadet orientations toward self-direction and conformity. We found little support for the model. Rather, there…

This study uses a large, nationally representative data base to examine the multiple correlates of enlistment of young men in the military. It focuses on the recent experience of the all volunteer force (AVF) and pays particular attention to the effects of work, school, and family roles on enlistment in the military and how these effects vary by race.
