Reading Peter Sedgwick in 2015
In this article, we reflect on some of the personal, professional and political contexts in which Peter Sedgwick wrote PsychoPolitics and the impact that it had on us when we first read it in 1982. In exploring the relevance of Peter Sedgwick’s work to the situation faced by mental health service users, survivors, activists and academics in 2015, we consider two topics: first, Sedgwick’s critique of the radical libertarian understanding of ‘menta…
Endogenous Institutions and the Politics of Property
The purpose of this paper is to contrast the work of Douglass North and Karl Polanyi regarding financial institutions associated in market economies. Both implicitly acknowledge the synergy between public and private financial markets, which can serve to solidify an alliance between wealth holders and the state, potentially at the expense of “sociery” at large. This alliance may stimulate growth, according to North, as well as impose the strain o…
Organizational Commitment Profiles and Job Satisfaction among Greek Private and Public Sector Employees
Recent research into organizational commitment has advocated a profiles-based approach. However, with the exception of Wasti, published findings are confined to North American samples. This article examines the relationships between organizational commitment profiles and job satisfaction in Greece. Greek organizations have rarely been the subject of detailed examination, so the study provides baseline information regarding levels of organizationa…

Korean Disability Employment Policy
From the 1960s onwards opportunities for employment for disabled people have been promoted by the South Korean government and recent research has focused on the achievements of policies in this area. However people with learning disabilities have largely been ignored in this research. The paper draws on a study which used research methods designed explicitly to enable people with learning disabilities to participate and their voices to be heard. …

Needs Assessment, Street‐level Bureaucracy and the New Community Care
In the wake of the Seebohm reforms of the personal social services, a number of studies were carried out in the 1970s to explore the role of frontline professionals in identifying and meeting social need. A common finding was that social workers behaved like “street‐level bureaucrats”, using their discretionary authority defensively to manage an otherwise overwhelming workload. In the 1990s, top‐down assessment and care management systems were pu…
The Logic of Ecstasy
In focusing on those works, writings, as well as painting, which do reflect their fascination with spiritual issues, we are able to se how these artists tried, in very individual ways, to delineate their visions of eternal life.

The Wembley Controversy in Canadian Art
