Police Organization and Policing Environment: Case Study of a Disjuncture

Attachments in the Nested Community: Evidence from a Case Study
Studies of emotional attachments to local communities in America have not generally included the conceptualization of the nested community offered by Albert Hunter and Gerald Suttles. Thus, most have not addressed the differential degree to which city dwellers forge attachments to different levels of community, or the social processes behind those emotional links. This article attempts to speak to those issues. It is based on surveys conducted in…

City Spending, Suburban Demands, and Fiscal Exploitation: A Replication and Extension
Suburban exploitation of the central city was once a hotly contested issue, but the exodus of people and jobs from the city and the involvement of the federal government in urban service provision have moved it from the forefront of scholarly attention. Those same developments, however, argue for more rather than less attention to exploitation, and the purpose of this paper is to offer some of that. Using data collected for 188 relatively compara…
Suburban Voting and Symbolic Communities: A Case Study
Hailed as a major conceptual advance, Gerald Sullies’ notion of nested communities of sentiment and interaction has rarely been tested in empirical research and never in studies of suburban-dwellers. This paper attempts to redress that gap. Using data on voting turnout in the election districts of one suburban New Jersey community, the paper offers an ecological analysis of the social bases for participation in elections of leaders for different …
Violence in the city: Empirical bases for a collective working image
Poor People's Lawyers in Transition
Urban Professionals and the Future of the Metropolis
Property Taxes and Community Political Structures
Survey findings from three American communities on citizens' willingness to support public programs through local property tax increases are examined to shed further light on the contemporary "taxpayers' revolt." The analysis discovers that distinctly different dynamics characterize the politics of local property tax proposals. Discrete proposals generate different patterns of community cleavage, which may or may not preclude passage; however, a …
