Sociological Theory in Transition (RLE Social Theory)
Current sociological theories appear to have lost their general persuasiveness in part because, unlike the theories of the ‘classical era’, they fail to maintain an integrated stance toward society, and the practical role that sociology plays in society. The authors explore various facets of this failure and possibilities for reconstructing sociological theories as integrated wholes capable of conveying a moral and political immediacy. They discu…
Membership Has its Privileges? Contracting and Access to Jobs That Accommodate Work-Life Needs
Using job-spell data based on an original survey of Information Technology (IT) degree graduates from five U.S. universities, the authors investigate the link between contracting and a set of job characteristics (accommodating flexible work hours, total work hours, and working from home) associated with work-life needs. Compared with regular employees in similar jobs, workers in both independent- and agency-contracting jobs report more often work…
Weathering the Storm: Coal Miners and Their Unions in Britain and Poland
Underlying this research is the authors' belief that labor unions have played. and will continue to play, an important role in defending workers' rights. But the extent to which labor unions will be able to carry on this role in the future depends on whether they survive the attacks of the corporate community and the anti-labor governments. We began this research with the premise that comparative-historical studies have the potential to make an i…
Social Problems: Pathways for Transcending Exclusive Sociology
In this paper we juxtapose assimilationist and diversity arguments found in recent metatheoretical discussions about a crisis in North American sociology. Each argument identifies a very different crisis, yet the remedies proposed appear similar in certain instances. We suggest that the assimilationist response to the crisis reproduces it, because this response requires exclusivity in sociological inquiry. Diversity reasoning acknowledges differe…
Gender and Employment in the Service Sector
Previous research (Steiger and Wardell 1992) assessed post-industrial society and labor process hypotheses using data representing the entire United States paid workforce for 1950, 1970, and 1990. Results indicate a better fit between changes in the skill composition of the workforce as expected by labor process theory than by post-industrial society theory. The present research focuses on the United States service sector from 1950 to 1990 using …
The Control of Sociological Theory: In Praise of the Interregnum
The argument advanced here contends that integrative efforts within sociology exacerbate, rather than mitigate, theoretical and organizational fragmentation. Viewing epistemologically driven movements towards theoretical control as counter- productive, this study contains a proposal for a greater analytical focus on ontology as a better way to promote and preserve the sociological enterprise. Such a move would reflect a return to the ethos of soc…
The Labor Reserve and the Skill Debate
Competing assertions abound about changes in the skill structure of wage labor. One claims that workplace changes do not necessarily lead to a general deskilling, but enhance skill levels for certain categories of wage labor; another, that such changes contribute to a general deskilling of the paid workforce. Despite having been the focus of much research, these competing assertions remain unresolved. Braverman's discussion of the labor reserve a…

G. H. Mead's Social Behaviorism vs. The Astructural Bias of Symbolic Interactionism
Symbolic inleractionism has been criticized for having an astructural bias. This paper presents a response to that criticism by examining the ontological stance contained in Mead's social behaviorism and contrasting it with the ontological stance of symbolic interactionism's chief architect, Herbert Blumer. Mead's social behaviorism is shown to be a nondualist philosophy of conduct based solidly on conceptions of the human community and of indivi…

Controversy and Ideological Hegemony in Sociological Theory
Sociological theory has been characterized by the recurrence of several controversies since its inception. The relationship between the individual and society represents one of these. Cooley's notion of the individual and society being twin-born has been labeled one of the major breakthroughs in this controversy. According to Tiryakian, Cooley's work signaled the end of that controversy, but still it reappears. Drawing heavily from Mannheim, Berg…
Reply to Young
I am pleased to be able to respond to the comment by T. R. Young. I believe that his intervention in the discussion between Marc Wardell and myself is useful, and I find myself in agreement with much of the general tone of his comments. There are specific points in his paper, however, with which I strongly disagree. I will respond to these points with a few brief comments. Young tells us that starts with a Now I am aware of no place where Marx ma…
