Research use of paired-comparisons scales involves two levels of assumptions, one set at the scaling stage and one set at the measurement stage. The basic scaling assumption is that the quantity of pro or con feeling implicit in each statement in a set of statements about some object can be reliably and meaningfully determined. The determination of these quantities is achieved by presenting a panel of judges with each statement paired with each o…

  • Inadvertent Sociological Theory

    Lewis F Carter•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1971•Cited by: 2

The measurement properties of indicators are shown to depend on the conceptualization of the constructs said to be measured by those indicators. The argument is developed that empirical statements about levels of measurement of an index cannot be sensibly made in isolation from the theoretical and substantive context in which the index is to be used. Assumptions that a variable is somehow “intrinsically” interval (ordinal, nominal) are analytical…

The attempt is made to utilize the findings of experimental studies to account for conformity in non-laboratory, small groups. Conformity is examined in 42 training groups of supervisory-level, professional nurses. The results suggest that laboratory findings can not be applied directly to the non-laboratory situation. A model incorporating direction of deviance, change in group norms, and the social context surrounding the group is developed. Th…
