Financial incentives to Medicaid smokers for engaging tobacco quit line treatment
Modelling suggests that financial incentives in the amount of $20 per call for taking the first four quit line calls and $70 for taking a fifth quit line call maximise ROI to engage low-income smokers with evidence-based smoking cessation treatment
Culturally Tailored Smoking Cessation for Adult American Indian Smokers
This collaborative, community-engaged project developed and tested a Culturally-Tailored Treatment (CTT) for American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) smokers in the Menominee tribal community. One hundred three adult AI/AN smokers were randomized to receive either Standard Treatment ( n = 53) or CTT ( n = 50) for smoking cessation. Both treatment conditions included 12 weeks of varenicline and four individual counseling sessions but differed in term…
Smoking-Cessation Media Campaigns and Their Effectiveness Among Socioeconomically Advantaged and Disadvantaged Populations
Objectives. We examined whether the impact of televised smoking cessation ads differed by a population’s education and income. Methods. We used longitudinal data from the Wisconsin Behavioral Health Survey, a statewide sample of 452 adult smokers who were interviewed in 2003 to 2004 and followed up 1 year later. Logistic regression was used to assess whether baseline recall of secondhand smoke ads and “keep trying to quit” ads was associated with…
Does over-the-counter nicotine replacement therapy improve smokers' life expectancy
Compared with [symbol: see text] availability of nicotine replacement therapy, OTC availability would result in more successful quitters, fewer smoking-attributable deaths, and increased life expectancy for current smokers
Approach and avoidance motivation in psychopathic criminal offenders during passive avoidance
The authors evaluated competing theories that attribute psychopathic individuals' poor passive avoidance to a strong activating system, a weak inhibitory system, or poor modulation of behavioral activation when inhibitory cues appear. In Study 1, the continuous motor task involved a reward phase to elicit the activating system followed by a passive avoidance phase. Study 2 tested the generality of the theories by using an active avoidance phase t…

The Effects of Classroom Racial Composition on Students' Interracial Friendliness
This study examines the effects of the racial composition of a classroom on students' cross-race and same-race friendships. Two theories of interracial sociability are discussed. The first argues that interracialfriendliness is affected primarily by the number of opportunities students have for cross-race interaction relative to same-race interaction. It predicts that students in the numerical minority are likely to make more cross-race friendshi…
