  • Military Wives

    Open Access•Diane E Levy, Gary L Faulkner et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1991

The traditional pattern of the two-person career in the military has undergone a transition so that the contemporary role of the military wife has become similar to the civilian one. Data from 111 women married to servicemen stationed overseas at 13 bases in 4 countries suggest that, although the traditional dependent pattern is no longer universal, much role ambiguity and conflict remain as families adapt to the changing military environment

326 subjects were randomly assigned to one of four descriptions of a defendant's statuses: adult male, adult female, juvenile male, and juvenile female. Subjects were asked to select type of punishment deemed appropriate for four episodes: shoplifting, drunkenness, murder, and possession/sale of hard drugs. The results provided support for the hypothesis that juveniles and females are treated more leniently for violations. In particular, female j…

    Open Access•Darrell Steffensmeier, Darrell J Steffensmeier et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1978

176 male and female college students read a description of a defendant and then sentenced the defendant with respect to five episodes depicting offense. The sex and parental status of the hypothetical defendant were varied. The results provided little support for the “practicality” hypothesis that defendants with children, especially female defendants, receive preferential treatment in criminal court. The data did show, however, that female defen…

  • Identification of Ministerial Cliques

Jack O Balswick, Gary L Faulkner•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•1970

Sociometry is used to identify and study social relationships and group formations within an inclusive sample of Protestant ministers (N = 39) in a medium-size city. Analysis of sociometric tests reveals that ministers form homogenous cliques, based on both theological beliefs and political attitudes, and that certain ministers within cliques are differentiated into star status and isolate status. It is suggested that the neglected study of socia…
