  • Scientific-Based Research and Randomized Controlled Trials, the "Gold" Standard? Alternative Paradigms and Mixed Methodologies

    Open Access•Thomas W Christ, Thomas Christ•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2014•Cited by: 10•References: 36

This article addresses three controversial issues related to mixed methods research and policy. First, "Scientific-Based Research" promoted by "No Child Left Behind" (NCLB) reinforces diametrically opposed paradigmatic views and research methodologies. As policy, NCLB prioritizes specific methodologies prescribing what counts as scientific evidence. Second, from a critical stance, federal policies shape and control decisions that funding agencies…

  • Designing, Teaching, and Evaluating Two Complementary Mixed Methods Research Courses

    Open Access•Thomas Christ•ARTICLE•Journal of Mixed Methods Research•2009•Cited by: 7•References: 8

Teaching mixed methods research is difficult. This longitudinal explanatory study examined how two classes were designed, taught, and evaluated. Curriculum, Research, and Teaching (EDCS-606) and Mixed Methods Research (EDCS-780) used a research proposal generation process to highlight the importance of the purpose, research question and methodology relationship following eight interactive features: (a) problem/focus of the study; (b) intended aud…

  • A Recursive Approach to Mixed Methods Research in a Longitudinal Study of Postsecondary Education Disability Support Services

    Open Access•Thomas Christ•ARTICLE•Journal of Mixed Methods Research•2007•Cited by: 12•References: 8

Mixed methods research has increased in popularity over the past 20 years. Literature reveals that exploratory qualitative analysis followed by confirmatory survey research is common and concurrent studies outnumber longitudinal design. Longitudinal studies using quantitative and qualitative methods in sequence for exploratory purposes are rare, and no studies were found that combine exploratory quantitative analysis followed by both an explorato…
