  • Disjunction of Heavenly and Earthly Times in the Ascension of Isaiah

Robert Hall, Robert T Hall•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2004

Ethics and the Sociology of Morals (La science positive de la morale en Allemagne) laid the foundation for Durkheim's future work. More than a review of current thought, it was a proclamation that ethics needed to be liberated from its philosophical bondage and developed as a distinct branch of sociology. Written when Durkheim was charting the course of his own research, it p…

    Robert T Hall•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•1991•Cited by: 3•References: 11

The recent communitarian perspective in philosophical ethics raises the question of the sociology of morals proposed by Emile Durkheim. Durkheim's critique of ethics is compared with that of Alasdair MacIntyre and the “sociological presupposition” of each is identified. Ethical relativism is evaluated in both Durkheim and MacIntyre. Durkheim's universalism is compared with and found preferable to MacIntyre's elitism. The article concludes with su…
