“Why not take that pill?”
People under community supervision who use drugs face elevated HIV risk. This randomized controlled trial used a mixed-methods approach to examine PrEP acceptance among community-supervised men who use drugs and their female partners. The study evaluated PrEP willingness among participants (N = 394) randomized to either PACT (5-session couples' HIV intervention) or control (1-session HIV counseling). Qualitative interviews with 20 couples (n = 40…
Child Protective Services Involvement Among Black Women in Community Supervision Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence
This study examines associations between male- and female-perpetrated psychological, physical, and sexual intimate partner violence and child protective services involvement among Black women under community supervision in New York City ( N = 247). Up to 72.1% of women experienced lifetime intimate partner violence (IPV) and 55.9% child protective services (CPS) involvement as parents. Women had significantly higher odds of CPS involvement if the…
Social Stigma and Vulnerabilities of Women Living With HIV/Aids in Kyrgyzstan

Intimate Partner Violence Studies in the English-Speaking Caribbean and Diaspora
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is the most common form of gender-based violence (GBV) experienced by women globally. In the Caribbean, IPV is especially pervasive. This scoping review systematically examined descriptive studies, surveys, secondary data analyses, and mixed-methods studies or interventions conducted between 2000-and 2022 that address IPV or GBV among English-speaking adult Caribbean populations within both the region and in diaspo…
‘Oh, they can prevent It?‘
BACKGROUND: Despite efforts to end the HIV epidemic, new transmissions among Black women in the U.S.' Deep South remain disproportionately high. This study examined condomless sex experiences and PrEP non-engagement among Black women in community supervision programs (e.g., diversion, probation, parole) in Alabama. METHODS: As part of Project E-WORTH South, we used a phenomenological approach and conducted 16 semi-structured interviews to explore…
Feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a combined intimate partner violence (IPV) and mental health intervention (WINGS+PM+) for women in informal settlements in Kenya
Differences in Xylazine and Xylazine Test Strip Usage Among Racial and Ethnic Minoritized Populations
Patterns of intimate partner violence among black women in community supervision programs who use drugs
BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) disproportionately affects Black women who use drugs and those mandated to community supervision programs (CSPs). Societal responses to minoritized identities such as being a woman who has sex with women and men (WSWM) and using substances further increases the risk. This study sought to 1) identify patterns of IPV perpetrated by male partners and 2) examine membership to latent classes and associations…

Preliminary Effects of a Syndemic-Focused Brief Intervention to Reduce Gender-Based Violence among Women with a History of Sex Trading and Substance Use
Women who engage in sex trading experience intersecting gender-based violence (GBV), perpetrated by intimate partners (intimate partner violence [IPV]) and nonintimate partners (nonintimate partner violence [nIPV]), and substance use risks. Yet, there remain few brief interventions to identify and address GBV among women with a history of sex trading and substance use. This article examines the preliminary effects of an adapted two-session eviden…
The Influence of Housing Status and Food Insecurity on a Behavioral HIV/STI Prevention Intervention for Black Women under Community Supervision in New York City
Synergistic effects of exposure to multiple types of violence on non-fatal drug overdose among women who inject drugs in Indonesia
This is the first study to show that concurrent IPV and police sexual violence exert an amplifying effect on non-fatal overdose beyond the additive effects of each exposure. Supporting the value of gender-responsive harm reduction services that integrate violence and overdose responses, results suggest that eliminating one form of violence when multiple forms of GBV are present could magnify the expected reduction in overdose
A randomized controlled trial testing the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects of a mental health Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment among refugees in Malaysia
BACKGROUND: Among refugees residing in countries of first asylum, such as Malaysia, high rates of psychological distress call for creative intervention responses. AIMS: This study examines implementation of a Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) model promoting emotional well-being and access to services. METHOD: = 56) refugees were randomized to receive either the intervention at baseline, or to a waitlist control gro…
Intervening on the Intersecting Issues of Intimate Partner Violence, Substance Use, and HIV
Intimate partner violence (IPV), HIV, and substance use are serious intersecting public health issues. This paper aims to describe the Social Intervention Group (SIG)'s syndemic-focused interventions for women that address the co-occurrence of IPV, HIV, and substance use, referred to as the SAVA syndemic. We reviewed SIG intervention studies from 2000 to 2020 that evaluated the effectiveness of syndemic-focused interventions which addressed two o…
Community-level determinants of stakeholder perceptions of community stigma toward people with opioid use disorders, harm reduction services and treatment in the Healing Communities Study
Trauma, Mental Health Distress, and Infectious Disease Prevention Among Women Recently Released From Incarceration
Given the impact of PTSD-related symptoms on driving both engagement in HIV/STIs/HCV prevention services and intervention attrition among women leaving incarceration, physical and behavioral health interventions must be both overtly trauma- and mental health-informed. As was the case with WORTH Transitions, physical and behavioral health services for this population must include intentional and active support of the forms of treatment participant…

Using latent class analys…
