  • Home pesticide use and childhood cancer

    Jack K Leiss, D A Savitz•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1995•Cited by: 5•References: 16

The association between childhood cancer and home pesticide use was examined in a case-control study of children under 15 years of age. Parents of 252 children diagnosed with cancer in the Denver area between 1976 and 1983 and of 222 control subjects were interviewed regarding use of home pest extermination, yard treatment, and pest strips. The strongest associations were found for yard treatments and soft tissue sarcomas (odds ratios [ORs] aroun…

  • Changes in Spanish surname cancer rates relative to other whites, Denver area, 1969-71 to 1979-81

    D A Savitz•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1986•Cited by: 5•References: 14

Cancer incidence rates for persons of Spanish surname and other Whites in the Denver, Colorado area were derived for two time periods, 1969-71 and 1979-81. The substantial deficits in total cancers for Spanish surname males and females relative to other Whites in 1969-71 diminished considerably for all age groups by 1979-81. The major determinants of this pattern were the rapidly rising Spanish surname rates for cancer of the colon and rectum, lu…

  • Determinants of medical record access for an epidemiologic study

    D A Savitz, Christopher Grace•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1985•References: 6

Hospital record access is often needed for epidemiologic research. In a recent study, 26 Denver-area hospitals were contacted for permission to review records. The review process, the decision regarding access, and hospital characteristics were analyzed. Hospitals with a review committee, larger hospitals, and those which reached a decision rapidly were most likely to grant access. These results may provide guidance to investigators planning stud…

  • Methodological error cited in Sids study

    D A Savitz•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1979•References: 5

Calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) have been widely used as an alternative to biological grafts due to their excellent osteoconductive properties. Although degradation has been improved by using poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) microspheres as porogens, the biological performance of CPC/PLGA composites is insufficient to stimulate bone healing in large bone defects. In this context, the aim of\nthis study was to investigate the effect of in…
