Economic costs of extreme heat on groundnut production in the Senegal Groundnut Basin
Intensive and extensive rice farm adaptations in salinity-prone areas of the Mekong Delta
Sea-level rise and resulting salinity inundation are making many coastal areas increasingly unfavorable for rice production. This paper examines intensive and extensive adaptations to rice production in salinity-prone areas of the Mekong River Delta (MKD) of Vietnam using a two-year panel dataset of 788 rice-growing households. In terms of intensive adaptations, we estimate a fixed-effect regression model and find that salinity tolerant rice vari…
Multidimensional Poverty in Crisis
Zimbabwe experienced an acute social, political, and economic crisis from 2001 to 2008 and is now on a recovery path. This paper explores changes in poverty between 2001, 2007, and 2011–2012 using an Alkire–Foster multidimensional poverty index. Results indicate a large increase in poverty across multiple dimensions of household wellbeing between 2001 and 2007 (the start of the crisis peak), followed by a decrease in poverty between 2007 and 2011…

Child Food Insecurity and the Food Stamp Program
The Food Stamp Program (FSP) is a cornerstone of the food assistance safety net’s efforts to reduce household food insecurity, particularly among children. We examine the dynamic relationship between FSP participation and child food insecurity using monthly measures from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, rather than annual measures. Findings demonstrate that child food insecurity increases in the months immediately prior to FSP entrance but the…

Determinants of Food Stamp Program Exits
This article examines factors that influence Food Stamp Program exits and finds that families who leave the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program are also more likely to leave the Food Stamp Program. However, the influence of TANF departure is smaller in states with large TANF caseload declines. The results also suggest that many families leaving the Food Stamp Program are still eligible for benefits. These families may have poor …
