Development and evaluation of training programs to improve health checkup recommendation materials
Background: Health communication materials must be easily understood by the target readers. Although numerous efforts have been made to recommend preventive services, the training of practitioners to create effective recommendation materials is insufficient. This study verifies whether the training provided to practitioners could lead to improvements in the recommendation materials using a checklist based on the suitability assessment of material…
Community resilience through partnership after the Great East Japan Earthquake
Introduction: This case study aimed to demonstrate how cooking class activities held in collaboration with the Ajinomoto Foundation (TAF) and a consumer cooperative after the Great East Japan Earthquake contributed to the resilience of the affected community. Methods: With reference to the logic model, evaluation indicators for the case study were established. We focused on the Iwate Seikatsu Kyodo Kumiai (Iwate Co-op). We organized 120 continuat…
Quantitative Definition of Low-Health-Interest Populations by Using Regression Trees
We determined the cutoff values of the IHS as <32 for a lower-health-interest group and <25 for the lowest-health-interest group. Using these cutoffs might enable us to reveal the characteristics of low-health-interest populations
Effect modification by geographic area on the association between health literacy and self-rated health
The findings indicate geographic differences in HL levels and effect modification by geographic area on the relationship between HL and self-rated health in the general Japanese population. HL was more strongly associated with self-rated health in eastern areas than in western areas. Further investigation is needed to explore the moderating effects of areal features, including the distribution of primary care physicians and social capital, when f…
Factors Associated with the Work Engagement of Employees Working from Home during the Covid-19 Pandemic in Japan
This study aimed to identify factors influencing the work engagement of employees working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan. Employees' work engagement was examined using the following survey questions: "Do you feel energized when you are at work? (yes or no)" and "Do you take pride in your work? (yes or no)" After adjusting for potential confounders, Poisson regression was used to examine prevalence ratio and 95% confidence interva…
Motivation for and Effect of Cooking Class Participation
We explored the association between the motivation for and effects of cooking class participation in disaster-affected areas following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. We conducted questionnaire surveys in January and February 2020, and applied three Poisson regression models to a cross-sectional dataset of participants, analyzing three perceived participation effects: increase in new acquaintances and friends, increase in excurs…
Health inequalities in Japan
Inequalities in self-rated health in Japan 1986–2007 according to household income and a novel occupational classification
BACKGROUND: Japan, for the past two decades, has seen economic stagnation and substantial social change. We examined whether health inequalities increased over this period. METHODS: Using eight triennial waves of a series of large nationally representative surveys between 1986 and 2007 (n=398 303), temporal trends in relative and slope indices of inequality (RII, SII, respectively) were tested based on self-rated health in relation to theory-base…

BCG Immunization Age in Urban and Rural Areas of Akita Prefecture, Japan
BCG immunization, utilizing whole-body coordination, is a highly cost-effective means of health intervention for preventing miliary tuberculosis (TB) and TB meningitis. In this study, we investigated the appropriate age by which a child should have completed his or her BCG immunization and discuss the current BCG immunization rate in Akita Prefecture, Japan. BCG immunization rates in urban and rural areas were 90.1% and 80.7%, respectively. Our i…
Municipal health expectancy in Japan
A decrease in healthy longevity of older people was associated with a higher percentage of households of a single elderly person and divorce rate, and lower socioeconomic conditions. This study suggests that older people in urban areas are susceptible to socio-demographic factors, and a social support network for older people living in socioeconomically disadvantaged conditions should be encouraged
Accumulation of health risk behaviours is associated with lower socioeconomic status and women's urban residence
Individual lower socioeconomic status was a substantial predictor of risk behaviour in both sexes, while a marked regional influence was observed only in women. The accumulation of risk behaviours in individuals with lower socioeconomic status and in women in areas with higher income, reflecting an urban context, may contribute to their higher mortality rates
Variation of health status among people living on boats in Hue, Vietnam
Objectives: To examine patterns of disease and injury in people living on boats in Hue City, Vietnam, and their relations to socioeconomic conditions, sanitary practices, disease prevention proficiency, and people’s preference to continued living on boats. Methods: The subjects were 3737 people aged 5 years and over living on boats in Hue City, Vietnam. Diseases and injuries were diagnosed according to ICD-10. The associations between disease/inj…
