Abortion as a Medical Career Choice
This is a study of physicians in Los Angeles who made the performance of abortions a major or sole component of their practice in the five years (1967-72) subsequent to the legalization of abortion in California. A semistructured interview was used to obtain data on the attitudes, values, and experiences of 42 such physicians. Four distinct career patterns (entrepreneurs, academics, workers, and community physicians) were found. As expected, the …

This paper is drawn from a larger study of physicians in Los Angeles who were heavily involved with abortion immediately after it was liberalized in 1967. I look at the 12 physicians who owned andtor operated abortion facilities and who employed other physicians. These physician entrepreneurs dominated the emerging market for abortions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of social class on the careers and vocational choices of male students at an elite college. Freshmen and seniors whose family backgrounds could be classified as working-class were compared with those who were classified as upper middle-class.
