Shifting Demographics, Shifting Perceptions: How Race and Politics Shape Reactions to the Majority-Minority Future
Racial minorities are expected to be a majority of the U.S. population by 2044. We examined predictors of Americans’ perceptions towards this racial demographic shift (RDS), how accurately they estimate others’ perceptions, and whether an intervention corrects people’s misperceptions. In Study 1, in a nationally representative sample ( N = 1,600), most Republicans, Independents, and Democrats viewed the RDS as neutral or good. Being White, conser…
Guilt Enhances the Persuasive Effects of Injunctive But Not Descriptive Social Norms
The focus theory of normative conduct asserts that distinct processes are involved in responding to injunctive norms versus descriptive norms. This research tested the prediction that guilt would be more strongly involved in motivating conformity to injunctive than descriptive norms. Roles of attitudes and injunctive norms in decisional conflict and disclosure following receipt of genome sequencing results
Discrimination and excessive weight gain during pregnancy among Black and Latina young women
Changes in Experiences With Discrimination Across Pregnancy and Postpartum: Age Differences and Consequences for Mental Health
Our results support a life course approach to understanding the impact of experiences with discrimination on health and when to intervene
Discrimination and sexual risk among young urban pregnant women of color
This is the first investigation establishing a link between discrimination and STI diagnosis, not just risk behavior. It does so among a sample of at-risk, young, pregnant, women of color. Findings suggest implications for sexual risk during pregnancy and across the life span, and risks for the pregnancy and fetus. It is vital to reduce discrimination to eliminate disparities in HIV and STIs. Future research should continue examining the role of …
HIV prevention interventions to reduce sexual risk for African Americans: The influence of community-level stigma and psychological processes
Associations of a Sexually Transmitted Disease Diagnosis During a Relationship with Condom Use and Psychosocial Outcomes: (Short) Windows of Opportunity
Few studies have examined whether and how receiving an sexually transmitted disease (STD) diagnosis while in a romantic relationship relates to condom use and psychosocial sexual outcomes. Using dyadic data, we examined associations of a personal or a partner's STD diagnosis during a relationship with condom use, monogamy intentions, condom intentions and attitudes, and STD susceptibility and communication. Because beliefs about how the STD was a…
Maternal Experiences with Everyday Discrimination and Infant Birth Weight: A Test of Mediators and Moderators Among Young, Urban Women of Color
Given the association between birth weight and health across the lifespan, it is critical to reduce discrimination directed at young, urban women of color so that all children can begin life with greater promise for health
