Socioeconomic inequity in extreme outcomes within very pre-term and/or very low birthweight infants
Background Pre-term birth (< 37 weeks' gestation) is a major cause of neonatal mortality, with very pre-term (< 32 weeks' gestation) and extremely pre-term (< 28 weeks' gestation) infants facing the highest risks. While socioeconomic disparities in pre-term birth are well-documented, relatively little is known about inequities among the highest risk subgroups. Methods Using data from the RECAP Pre-term Project across six high-income countries, we…
Prevalence of visual conditions among orphaned children in Togo
Background Visual impairments in children can significantly impact their development.Aim To assess the prevalence of visual conditions among Togolese orphaned children.Subjects and methods A total of 673 orphans of Sub-Saharan African descent, aged 1 month to 23 years, from 17 orphanages in Lomé and surrounding areas were examined between October 2021 and April 2025. Eye assessments included the use of an otoscope, ophthalmoscope, LEA symbol char…
The impact of very preterm vs very low birth weight on early and mid-adulthood preference-based HRQoL outcomes
VP and VLBW are not interchangeable risk categories. While overall HRQoL scores converged by mid-adulthood, distinct domain-specific and sex-based disparities were evident earlier in life. Our findings highlight the need for tailored interventions over a homogenous approach. Future research with consistent measures is required to confirm if this convergence persists over the life course
The association between serum vitamin D status and dental caries or molar incisor hypomineralisation in 7–9-year-old Norwegian children
Vitamin D status was not significantly associated with the prevalence and number of teeth affected by caries and MIH among the participating children. Large prospective studies with multiple serum vitamin D measurements and oral examinations throughout childhood are warranted to elucidate the relationship
Health status and public health needs in a Togolese child health care centre modelled after the Dutch system
A large group of children in need of prevention and early treatment were detected, informed and treated by the centre. Further research is needed to confirm if this strategy can improve children's health in Sub-Saharan Africa. Our data are available for further research
Exploring the Effects of Environmental Factors on the Development of 0–4-Year Old Children in The Netherlands
Air pollution, noise, and green space are important environmental exposures, having been linked to a variety of specific health outcomes. However, there are few studies addressing overall early life development. To assess their effects, associations between developmental milestones for a large population of 0-4-year old children in The Netherlands and environmental exposures were explored. Developmental milestones and background characteristics w…
Prevalence and pattern of alcohol consumption during pregnancy in the Netherlands
In contrast to Dutch guidelines which advice to completely abstain from alcohol, one in five women in the Netherlands consume alcohol during pregnancy
A systematic approach to implementing and evaluating clinical guidelines
Height of South Asian children in the Netherlands aged 0–20 years
The discrepancies between the South Asian and Dutch and WHO height-for-age references indicate differences in growth patterns between the source populations
Increase in Prevalence of Overweight in Dutch Children and Adolescents
OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity among Dutch children and adolescents, to examine the 30-years trend, and to create new body mass index reference charts. DESIGN: Nationwide cross-sectional data collection by trained health care professionals. PARTICIPANTS: 10,129 children of Dutch origin aged 0-21 years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Overweight (including obesity) and obesity prevalences for Dutch children, defined by the cu…
P2-470 Reference values for childhood body mass index in the era of the overweight epidemic
Introduction Due to the overweight and obesity epidemic, growth references based on recent data may no longer be appropriate for monitoring childhood body mass index (BMI) as they may underestimate the problem. Our aim is to determine the difference in signalling overweight and obesity between the use of up to date references and cut-offs for BMI according to the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF). Methods The growth references for BMI were …
O4-1.3 Overweight in short and tall children
Introduction It is known that body mass index is correlated with height. This suggests that the prevalence rates of overweight and obesity differ between tall and short children. Our aim is to study the impact of height during childhood on the national prevalence rates of overweight and obesity at childhood and adulthood. Methods We used cross-sectional growth data from the previous two Dutch nationwide surveys performed in 1997 (n=14 500) and 20…
Preferences and choices for care and health insurance
Referral patterns of children with poor growth in primary health care
The current Dutch consensus guideline leads to too many referrals, mainly due to the deflection of length during the first 3 years of life. The UKCG leads to far less referrals, but may be relatively insensitive to detect clinically relevant growth disorders like Turner syndrome. New guidelines for growth monitoring are needed, which combine a low percentage of false positive results with a good sensitivity
