Sesotho Women’s Preferences for Male Partner Involvement During Antenatal Care and Delivery
Male partner involvement (MPI) is recognised as an important strategy for improving maternal health, yet little is known about women's preferences for how men should participate in antenatal care (ANC) and childbirth. This study explored Sesotho-speaking women's preferences for MPI and identified the forms of involvement that they considered to be appropriate and beneficial using a concurrent mixed-methods design. A survey was conducted with 513 …
Exploring Health Research Priority Setting in a South African Province
In August 2022, the Free State Provincial Health Research Committee used the online nominal group technique (NGT) for Health Research Priority Setting (HRPS) for the Free State Department of Health (FSDoH) and the research community, considering various stakeholders' perspectives. This paper explores and describes the identified health research priorities. It also assesses their alignment with the National Health Research Strategy. Additionally, …
Exploring Managers’ Insights on Integrating Mental Health into Tuberculosis and HIV Care in the Free State Province, South Africa
The integration of mental health (MH) services into tuberculosis (TB) and HIV care remains a significant challenge in South Africa's Free State province. This study seeks to understand the perspectives of public health programme managers on the barriers to such integration and to identify potential strategies to overcome these challenges. Data were collected between February and October 2021 using qualitative methods including four individual sem…
Exploring Factors Associated with Limited Male Partner Involvement in Maternal Health
Despite efforts to promote gender-inclusive approaches to maternal health, male partner involvement (MPI) remains limited, underscoring the need for a comprehensive understanding of the factors associated with a lack of MPI. A mixed method, concurrent/parallel design was applied to explore MPI in maternal health and to identify factors associated with limited MPI. Data collection entailed a cross-sectional survey among 407 fathers together with 1…
Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy in South Africa
Vaccine hesitancy, long considered a global health threat, poses a major barrier to effective roll-out of COVID-19 vaccination. With less than half (45%) of adult South Africans currently fully vaccinated, we identified factors affecting non-uptake of vaccination and vaccine hesitancy in order to identify key groups to be targeted when embarking upon COVID-19 vaccine promotion campaigns. A cross-sectional, anonymous online survey was undertaken a…
Post-Traumatic Stress and Coping Strategies of South African Nurses during the Second Wave of the Covid-19 Pandemic
Prior to the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the South African healthcare system was already under severe strain due to amongst others, a lack of human resources, poor governance and management, and an unequal distribution of resources among provinces and between the public and private healthcare sectors. At the center of these challenges are nurses, the backbone of the healthcare system, and the first point of call for most patients …
Reducing HIV- and TB-Stigma among healthcare co-workers in South Africa
Yield of systematic household contact investigation for tuberculosis in a high-burden metropolitan district of South Africa
The high yield of new TB observed in this pilot study demonstrates that targeted SHCI may be an effective ACF strategy in Mangaung and similar high-burden settings in South Africa. Targeting different index case categories produced variable yield - the highest among contacts of HIV-negative TB index cases. SHCI among household contacts of all four the WHO-recommended categories of infectious TB index cases - and male and coughing contacts, in par…
Fighting stigma, promoting care
Fear of breaches in confidentiality and HIV-related stigma in the workplace have been shown to be primary concerns and potential barriers to uptake of HIV testing and treatment by health care workers (HCWs) at the Occupational Health Unit (OHU). In a context of human resource shortages, it is essential to investigate potential ways of reducing HIV-related stigma and promoting confidentially in the workplace. Using Structural Equation Modelling (S…
State and non-state mental health service collaboration in a South African district
The Life Esidimeni tragedy in South Africa showed that, despite significant global gains in recognizing the salience of integrated public mental health care during the past decade, crucial gaps remain. State and non-state mental health service collaboration is a recognized strategy to increase access to care and optimal use of community resources, but little evidence exist about how it unfolds in low- to middle-income countries. South Africa's Me…
Tuberculosis knowledge, attitudes and practices of patients at primary health care facilities in a South African metropolitan
These findings highlight the need for health education efforts to strengthen accurate information dissemination to promote sound TB knowledge and attitudes among patients attending PHC facilities. Health education efforts should also capitalise on the positive finding of this study that information dissemination at PHC facilities increases good infection control practices
TB/HIV-related training, knowledge and attitudes of community health workers in the Free State province, South Africa
With its emphasis on task shifting and multi-trained and skilled outreach teams the primary healthcare (PHC) re-engineering strategy in South Africa depends on the training, knowledge and attitudes of community health workers (CHWs) to provide a variety of TB/HIV services. The aim of this exploratory research was to assess TB/ HIV-related training, knowledge and attitudes of CHWs. Interviews were conducted with 206 CHWs at 28 clinics in 1 urban a…
