The updated competencies provide a common language for effective practice and a baseline to fulfill the core functions of public health in Canada. The update process involving the public health community across the country generated powerf…
Evaluation of a Question Prompt List About Cardiovascular Disease Risk and Prevention After Hypertensive Pregnancy
INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to pilot test a question prompt list (QPL) about cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk reduction after hypertensive pregnancy (HDP). METHODS: In a prospective cohort study of adult women who had HDP given the QPL before and surveyed after a physician visit, we assessed perceived person-centred care, self-efficacy for self-management, perceived self-management and QPL feasibility. RESULTS: Twenty-three women par…
Understanding the mental health and intention to leave of the public health workforce in Canada during the Covid-19 pandemic
During the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the public health workforce experienced negative impacts on their mental health. 33% of the sample indicated an intention to leave their role, which has the potential to exacerbate pre-existing challenges in workforce retention. Study findings create an impetus for policy and practice changes to mitigate risks to mental health and attrition to create safe and healthy working environments for public health wor…
What are effective strategies to respond to the psychological impacts of working on the frontlines of a public health emergency
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the healthcare and public health sectors. The impact of working on the frontlines as a healthcare or public health professional has been well documented. Healthcare organizations must support the psychological and mental health of those responding to future public health emergencies. Objective: This systematic review aims to identify effective interventions to support healthcare workers' mental heal…
The association between public health engagement in school-based substance use prevention programs and student alcohol, cannabis, e-cigarette and cigarette use
This study highlights the need to develop better partnerships and collaborations between public health and schools, and the importance of ensuring that school-based substance use prevention programs are evidence-based and tailored to the specific needs of schools and students
Nurse-Family Partnership and Geography
Nurse-Family Partnership is a targeted public health intervention program designed to improve child and maternal health through nurse home visiting. In the context of a process evaluation, we posed the question: "In what ways do Canadian public health nurses explain their experiences with delivering this program across different geographical environments?" The qualitative methodology of interpretive description guided study decisions and data wer…
The Relationship Between the Position of Name Generator Questions and Responsiveness in Multiple Name Generator Surveys
Using randomly ordered name generators, we tested the effect of name generators' relative position on the likelihood of respondents' declining to respond or satisficing in their response. An online survey of public health staff elicited names of information sources, information seekers, perceived experts, and friends. Results show that when name generators are asked later, they are more likely to go unanswered and respondents are more likely to r…
Impact of an organization-wide knowledge translation strategy to support evidence-informed public health decision making
Knowledge brokering is a promising organizational knowledge translation intervention to support evidence-informed decision making. The intervention appeared to have the greatest impact on those who became actively engaged with the knowledge broker in the intervention. Active participation in face-to-face training activities with a knowledge broker, focused specifically on evidence-informed decision making skill development, led to the greatest im…
Knowledge Translation for Service Providers with Addiction or Recovery Experience
Factors related to implementation of evidence-based practices in the treatment of addiction include the personal history of addiction and recovery of service providers working in those treatment services. The purpose of this Delphi study was to outline knowledge translation (KT) activities that are specific to the needs of service providers who are themselves in recovery from addiction. Twelve administrators of addiction agencies serving women in…
Challenges of partnership research
The investment of decision makers in research can increase the likelihood that relevant and timely practice-based research questions are asked and that these findings are readily taken up into policy and practice. While many positive benefits may be gained from this type of research, various challenges may also arise along the way. These include: unpredictable practice settings and a change in priorities or study focus over time; time and staff w…
Predictors of Research Use Among Staff in Aboriginal Addiction Treatment Programs Serving Women
The objective of this study was to identify the predictors of research use among staff from Aboriginal addiction programs serving women. A total of 89 staff from 26 Aboriginal addiction programs completed an online survey that included items assessing the theory of planned behavior constructs (attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control), intent to use research, and research use. Consistent with the theory of planned behavior, resea…
Tools to support evidence-informed public health decision making
Tools are available to support the process of evidence-informed decision making among public health professionals. The usability and usefulness of these tools for advancing and sustaining evidence-informed decision making are discussed, including recommendations for the tools' application in other public health settings beyond this study. Knowledge and awareness of these tools may assist other health professionals in their efforts to implement ev…
School-based physical activity programs for promoting physical activity and fitness in children and adolescents aged 6 to 18
BACKGROUND: Physical activity among children and adolescents is associated with lower adiposity, improved cardio-metabolic health, and improved fitness. Worldwide, fewer than 30% of children and adolescents meet global physical activity recommendations of at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day. Schools may be ideal sites for interventions given that children and adolescents in most parts of the world spend a substan…
Partnerships Among Canadian Agencies Serving Women with Substance Abuse Issues and Their Children
Women with substance use issues and their children have unique needs that are best met through collaborative and coordinated service delivery offered by a variety of agencies. However, in Canada and elsewhere, services tend to be fragmented and fail to address children's needs. This study aimed to describe the partnership patterns, activities, and qualities among Canadian agencies serving women with addictions and to determine predictors of partn…
Comparison of the Use of Self-Report Surveys and Organizational Documents in Knowledge Translation Research
We compared the same outcome data obtained from two different sources (self-report surveys and organizational documents) in order to examine their relative performance in evaluating the effect of knowledge translation strategies on evidence-informed decision-making. Our data came from a randomized controlled trial that evaluated the impact of knowledge translation strategies on promoting evidence-informed decision-making in public health units ac…

Consistent use of health-evidence.ca and particularly the searching for reviews that correspond with current public health priorities illustrates that health-evidence.ca may be playing an important role in achieving evidence-informed public health decision making
Facilitating access to pre-processed research evidence in public health
This paper describes an existing hierarchy of pre-processed evidence and its adaptation to the public health setting. A number of resources with public health-relevant content that are either freely accessible or requiring a subscription are identified. This will facilitate easier and faster access to pre-processed, public health-relevant evidence, with the intent of promoting evidence-informed decision making. Access to such resources addresses …
